Why Can't Dogs Eat Onions

Pinscher breed dog

From the first moment we decide to share our life with a dog, we have to bear in mind that it will need a series of care to be happy, among which are daily exercise, a lot of company and affection, and adequate nutrition.

In this sense, since the invention of animal feed, during World War II, we have been told and repeated ad nauseam that you can only eat that type of food and that there are some foods that are toxic to them. Why can't dogs eat onion? Is it really that dangerous?

Like everything in this life, it depends. If you don't give him an excessive amount, nothing will happen. The onion contains a compound called n-propyldisulfide, which is toxic to dogs in high amounts as it destroys red blood cells. By doing so, it causes him a type of hemolytic anemia that will need veterinary help to recover.

Symptoms of onion poisoning will manifest in 5-6 days. They are as follows: diarrhea, lethargy, vomiting, trouble breathing, bloody urine, and increased heart rate. If our friend has eaten more onion than he should and starts to feel bad, we should take him to the vet as soon as possible.

Is onion really so dangerous for the dog? No not at all. For it to be, you should consume 0,5% of your body weight in this food, something that even humans don't do. In addition, it must be borne in mind that we are not going to feed meat with this food every day, otherwise we would not be giving it all the nutrients that the animal needs to grow.

And there is even more: the onion has very beneficial properties for the body. Protects the furry from bacteria, improves blood circulation and strengthens the immune system.. So don't hesitate to give him a little onion from time to time. 🙂
