Dogs are carnivorous animals, but unlike cats, they are not strict; that is, they can eat other things than meat without problems. In addition, even before they were domesticated, they also lived as scavengers, in the same way that wild dogs do today, such as Africans, whose scientific name is lycaon pictus. Therefore, your stomach is more than ready to eat the leftovers.

However, to have good health they need to consume high-quality protein, good fats, vitamins and minerals. Carbohydrates, which is what bread contains the most, may or may not be present in your diet; and if they are, they should be moderately. They should never be the basis of your diet, since they are transformed above all into sugar at the end of digestion.

Thus, a high intake would increase blood glucose levels, so that dogs could end up suffering from diabetes. And that's not to mention that offering them foods rich in carbohydrates on a daily basis could put on weight very quickly, putting his life at risk.

What kinds of bread can I give them?

If you want to offer them bread from time to time, Ideally, you should do it yourself with whole grains or cereals such as oats, rice, barley and flax.. Do not add common yeast or baking powder to the dough, since it could be very dangerous for them since when they decompose in their digestive tract, the furry ones could suffer an ethyl coma. You shouldn't add salt or sugar either. As alternatives you can use pure honey, oatmeal and turmeric.

But if you don't want to complicate yourself, you can buy homemade bread, without preservatives, colorants or other industrial additives. You can find them in bakeries and organic food stores.

How often can it be given to them?

As we have mentioned, you cannot give them bread every day. In the past they were given, especially after the war as there was not much else to offer them, but today the ideal is to give them the Barf, Summum or Yum Diet, or feed that is rich in animal protein such as Acana, Orijen, Applaws or Taste of the Wild.

If you want to offer them bread as a reward, give them no more than three times a week. A piece, smaller if they are small dogs or larger if they are large. But of course, you are probably wondering what the size of the piece should be, right?

The truth is that it will depend a lot on the dogs themselves, and specifically on their mouth. A Chihuahua, for example, with half a tip of a loaf of bread lasts two or three days; On the other hand, if it is a German shepherd, you can easily give it the whole tip, which, if you like it, it will end up eating it that day.
