Fish, good or bad for dogs?

Pug eating.

A frequent question regarding the dog's diet is whether the consumption of fish is harmful or beneficial for this animal. The truth is that certain types of fish they do provide vitamins and minerals to dogs, as long as they are cooked properly and we do not make them the basis of their diet.

Fish benefits

We can include this food in our dog's diet, as long as we do it in the correct way, as it provides benefits such as the following.

• Rich in Omega 3. This fatty acid helps the animal to prevent cardiovascular diseases, alleviate joint pain and improve the appearance of hair and skin.

• Provides vitamins of groups A, B and D.

• Contains minerals. Among them, calcium, zinc, magnesium and iodine.

• Helps regulate cholesterol level. Thanks to its high percentage of unsaturated fats, present especially in oily fish.

• Promotes the regeneration of tissues and cells. This strengthens the muscles and favors the proper functioning of the body.

What types of fish can the dog eat?

In principle, both white and blue fish are beneficial for dogs. However, we have to take into account some details; for example, oily fish is more caloric, so it is not suitable for overweight dogs. In general, the most recommended for them are the salmon, tuna, mackerel, herring, hake and sardines.

How to prepare and serve it?

We can give it fresh or canned (always canned naturally and low in salt), the first option being the most recommended. To do this, we have to remove the thorns and the skin, and then cook it boiled or grilled (never fried or battered), at a low temperature, without exceeding 70 degrees, so that it preserves its properties intact. Once it has cooled down enough, we serve it with a little olive oil.

We can mix it with other foods, such as carrot or boiled rice. However, we should never serve it together with the animal's feed, since natural foods require a different digestive process than commercial feed. Also, do not abuse the fish, because once a week is enough.

Consult with the vet

Before including any food in the animal's diet, we have to ask the vet. He will indicate the recommended amounts for our dog and will explain how to do it properly. This step is essential for your well-being.
