Necessary vaccinations before going out on the street

First vaccination of a puppy

We all want the health of our dog to always be good, and for this, in addition to making sure that its diet is appropriate for its age, it is essential to take the veterinarian to examine it and give the puppy the first vaccinations; at least the mandatory ones. In this way, the animal will be able to grow without having to worry about viruses, fungi and / or bacteria that can affect itEspecially while you are young which is when your immune system is still in the strengthening phase.

But what are the first vaccinations a dog needs? Do they have side effects? We are going to talk about all this and much more in this special.

Before giving the first vaccine to a puppy

Dog vaccinations

When we bring a puppy home, it must be taken to the veterinary clinic for examination. Just in case you are in good health, give you an antiparasitic pill, which will be the one that prevents the dreaded internal parasites from proliferating and seriously affecting your health. Later, he will send him home and tell you to come back for the first vaccination between a week and 14 days later, depending on the pill he has given.

What are vaccines?

It is likely that some of you have wondered what vaccines are, or what they are made of. Well, it's just the virus itself weakened. Yes, yes, it may seem strange that viruses are administered to animals (also to people), but it is the only way to get the immune system to create antibodies that will be useful in the event that it comes in contact with them later. an external virus.

But, do not worry, that those who are in the vaccines, they cannot attack or cause any harm to your dog.

Dog vaccination schedule

Newly vaccinated dog

Once the dog is fully dewormed, the first vaccine can be given between six and eight weeks of life. At this age they are given a first dose of the parvo virus, and another from distemper, a very serious respiratory disease that puppies often suffer from. If you are also going to be in contact with more dogs, it is recommended to give the bordertella and parainfluenza vaccines.

At nine weeks of age, you will be given the second vaccine, which will protect you from adenovirus type 2, infectious hepatitis C, lethospirosis y parvo virus. When he is twelve weeks old, a dose of this vaccine will be repeated, and that is when we can walk with him with complete peace of mind.

Four weeks later, the vaccine against rage. And then once a year, the five-fold vaccine (parvovirus, distemper, hepatitis, parainfluenza, leptosipirosis) and rabies is given.

Optionally, you can now also request that they provide you with the leishmaniasis vaccine from six months of age, for which they will do a test to confirm that the dog is healthy, and then they will inject 3 doses separated by 21 days. On an annual basis, you will need a new dose to reinforce it.

El microchip It is very important that it be implanted (in fact, it is mandatory in many countries such as Spain), since in the event that it is lost, it could be located at any veterinary clinic. Anyway, it doesn't hurt to put an identification plate on your necklace, with your phone number.

Do vaccines have side effects?

Unvaccinated dog

Not always, but yes, there may be. Especially young dogs, they can feel pain o itching, and even hair loss in the area where the vaccine has been injected. But it usually happens in a short time.

In very serious cases, they may suffer anaphylaxis, which is a reaction of the body which originates when it tries to defend itself, thus destroying its own red blood cells. However, it is very rare.

Prices of the first puppy vaccinations

Prices vary in each state, and even in each community, but more or less, prices in Spain are around the 20-30 euros each. The first three for leishmaniasis, together with the test, cost 150 euros, and revaccination 60 euros. So, yes, the first year of the dog's life will always be the most expensive, so we will have to make a piggy bank so that it can receive all of them, or at least the mandatory ones.

What happens if I do not vaccinate my dog?

Well, you should know that there are some that are mandatory, so if a vet found out, you could still have problems, to the point that they could take it away. Beyond that, a dog that is not vaccinated is at enormous risk for life-threatening diseases, like distemper. In addition, you could also put the dogs in your neighborhood at risk, since your dog could be a carrier of some disease.

A dog must be a member of the family, one more. Among the care that we must provide is veterinary care.

So, it is highly recommended to vaccinate your dog so that health is not compromised.

When can a puppy go outside?

Belgian Shepherd puppy

There are many doubts on this subject. Until not long ago, veterinarians said that the puppy could not leave until it was fully vaccinated, but the reality was that if it did so, we would have an animal that would pass its most sensitive period, that of socialization, within four walls. This period begins at two months and ends at three months, that is, it lasts no more than eight weeks.

Socialize the puppy

Tips for socializing the puppy

At that time, the can has to have contact with other furry animals (dogs, cats, ... and with all those that tomorrow will have to interact) and with peopleOtherwise, when he grows up, it will be much more difficult for him to learn to behave and be with them. For this reason, and even at the risk that some professionals may contradict me, I am going to recommend you to take your puppy for a walk at an early age: at two months.

But yes, you can't take him anywhere. The immune system is not yet developed, which, added to the fact that he has not received all the vaccines, could put his health and even his life at risk if a series of measures are not taken to avoid it. Therefore, you never have to take it through areas where many dogs go or that are very dirty, but it will be very good to do it through clean and quiet streets so that your friend gradually gets used to the noise of the nuclei urban (cars, trucks, etc.).

How long does the ride have to be? It will depend on the animal itself, but generally it does not have to last more than twenty minutes, since when he is so young he tires very quickly. That is why it is always going to be better to do 4-5 short walks than 1-2 long ones.

Let's summarize, you inflate the poor animal with vaccines and leave him disappointed.
How are you going to give the animal 7 vaccinations in the first year of life? You are missing a screw.
Between the 7 vaccinations and the 12 walks you leave it sheltered.

    Hi, my name is Alejandra.
I have a question, I have 6 puppies and a week ago they finished with the deworming and the vet told me that when they are two months old they will give them the first vaccine and well I made them a corral but suddenly they escape and they are already running around the room And it worries me because we go in and out of the street, can they get a soil disease?

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Alejandra.
The risk is there, yes. But it really is low.
Still, it's best to try and keep them in a room and mop up our footprints, just in case.

    Hi juani.
If both of your dogs are vaccinated and the puppy is healthy, you don't have to worry.
You can put them together without problem, and vaccinate the little one when it is his turn.

When do I go to the vet to give her more vaccines, I don't know if they are needed, here the vets are quite expensive and I don't want to be fooled
    all the best
ps they had given her raw meat waste from there is the vomited one that has released me in the car, otherwise she is playing non-stop

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Fernando.
The ideal would be to wait until it has all the vaccines, but you can take it out in places where not many dogs pass and in areas that are clean (that is, there are no excrements of other dogs or other animals).
With three months you can take it to get the next one.

Hello, I found an American pitbull, he must be two or 3 months old but I'm very scared because I have two little boys and a dog and I don't know what to do.

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi barbra.
The first thing I would recommend is that you take him to a veterinarian to find out if he has a microchip, since it is very strange that a purebred dog, and even more so being a puppy, walks loose on the street as if it were abandoned.
Afterwards, it is advisable to put up posters, for the same reason: someone could be looking for it.
If after 15 days no one claims it, then you can decide whether to keep it or not. In the event that you decide to keep it, tell you that it takes care of itself the same as another dog and needs the same, that is: water, food, affection, company, games and daily walks. There does not have to be a problem.
      A greeting.

Hello, I have a Samoyed puppy, it is already 3 months old and I had her vaccinated in the way you indicate on the blog. The vaccine that I administered was the eighth one (adenovirus type 2, parainfluenza, and canine parvovirus) but they did not tell me if the vaccine for distemper is different or not ... but I already did until his third booster. And they tell me that only that vaccine is necessary and I don't think so… .mmm will it be that you get me out of the doubt that it is the vaccine that is missing or if it needs another booster?

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Marcel.
Each country has different mandatory vaccinations. Most likely, your dog already has all the necessary ones, so in principle you should not worry 🙂.
If you live a normal life and are well, you will be in good health.

" and I also have a one-year-old puppy in the house. Can they play together?

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hey.
The risk of contagion is always there 🙁, but with the vaccine you will be 98% protected, so it is very difficult for you to end up with distemper.
Regarding your last question, yes, you can play together.

Hello, I want to stay with a 2 and a half month old puppy who has an acquaintance, but he has not given him the sterilization pill or any vaccine, he has it in a kind of corral with straw and not in a room, they also give him already human food. I am concerned that he is sick because I have not given him anything, and if it is late to sterilize and vaccinate. Thank you

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Ana.
      Do I answer you:
-Vaccines: it is never too late to get vaccinations. In fact, with two and a half months you should have 2 of the 5-6 (depending on the country they are more or less).
-Sterilization: it is done after 6 months.
-Food: the more natural it is, the better. The ideal is precisely to give them natural meat, although if we cannot afford it, it is recommended to give them feed that does not contain cereals.
-Deworming: it must be done 10 days before vaccinating them.

I am not 100% convinced that you recommend me ??? Wait or take her to vaccinate now?

    Good afternoon.

At home we have a puppy for 2 weeks and between my partner and I we do not agree.
You should always wait for the dog to finish the primary vaccination (or something like that is mentioned by the vet) to go outside or is it better if the dog can go out little by little and prioritize socialization?

A greeting and thank you very much.

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Carla.
Well, there are different opinions about it. There are those who think that you have to wait until you have all the vaccines, and others that it is better to start taking it out now.
I can tell you that I have taken my dogs for a walk (yes, short walks, and always through clean streets) with two months, that they had only a vaccine, and there has been no problem.
Think that the socialization period ends at three months. If you do not have contact now with people, dogs and cats, then it will cost you more to get along with them (I also tell you from experience).

Good! On Saturday we picked up a Beagle puppy that was born on May 3rd. They gave us dewormed (from hydatidosis and internal with virbaminthe) and with the first puppy vaccine. They all put it on on 15/6. Yesterday the vet came to the house and punctured him once. Although in the primer he put two stickers (eurican chp mhp Lmulti). He explained to us that the only thing that would have to be put on it would be anger and chip. With this, and sorry that I have extended so much but I wanted to explain it, I wanted to ask, were not 3 puppy vaccinations? He explained to us what he put it, but with so many strange names ... I only know what he put in the primer. Could you take him out on the street now? He is 10 weeks old.

      Hi Erika.
Every country, even every veterinarian, follows its own vaccination schedule. It is not that none is worse or better than the others, but that each one follows his own depending on which are the diseases that most affect dogs in the area.
Regarding the second question, it is recommended to deworm ten before the vaccine.

Or do you need to have the other reinforcement yet?

      Hi Jazmin.
In principle, you can take it home. In any case, I recommend you consult a veterinarian to be more sure.

Hello!! I have a puppy that is only 16 months old on August 2 and is an English Shepherd, they gave it to me without vaccines and without deworming. Today I gave it the five-fold vaccine and they dewormed it but my question is ... that vaccine? Does it not affect you? And when should I put the spare of both? Can I take it out on the street now? Thanks!

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi, Diana.
Yes, there is no universal vaccination schedule. Each professional follows his depending on which are the most common diseases in the place where he works. He can tell you when it's next time, but it's usually the next month.
You can take it out to the street now, taking it to places that you know are more or less clean.
      A greeting.

Hello, good afternoon..my chihuahua puppy is two months old and with two vaccinations..I would miss the third one that I have to go at 15 days after having put the second one ... my question is ... can I get my puppy with two vaccinations only to the street, to walk him and socialize. my veterinarian told me that until the third vaccination and wait 24 hours after the administration. I could get it out now ... but later many people tell me that with two vaccines I can get it out ...

      Hello, Elizabeth.
You can take it out now, as long as it is through clean streets 🙂

Hello my daughter has a puppy and I want to know where I get her vaccinations and what is low cost and where do I put her name

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Arelu.
Sorry, but I have not understood you correctly. The vaccines are given by a veterinarian in his clinic. I don't know if you asked that.
The name, when you go to put the microchip, the vet will ask you to write it on the puppy's file.
      A greeting.

Hello, last night I picked up a dog from the street, I think she is about two and a half months old. It worries me since she is not vaccinated or dewormed and sometimes when she is lying down she screams, what could it be? Another thing, can you sleep with me even though I'm not vaccinated or anything? It does not have ticks or fleas

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello barbara.
I recommend you first take her to the vet to see if she has a chip, since someone may be looking for her. Incidentally, you should examine her to see how she is doing and why she is screaming.
Wait a minimum of 10-15 days before deciding what to do. That is the time that the possible family has to claim it.

In the meantime, you can sleep with her.

      a greeting

Hello good morning, my puppy Bruno is 4 months old, yesterday Friday he got a chip and the third vaccine, leave it to me he told me not to take it out for 3 to 5 days… .would something happen if I take it out tomorrow ??? It would have been two days ... the issue of vaccines was delayed for me because he was hospitalized 4 times and after having exoled all the corresponding tests and discarded he is epileptic, he is taking luminaleta and has been pissing for a long time ... I really want to take him out to the street since k I keep an eye on him 24 hours a day with the issue of controlling if they give him combulsions, thank you very much

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Aranzazu.
If you were sick, it is best to always listen to the vet. It's better to prevent than to cure.

Hello. I'm going to pick up a dog today from a person who gives it up for adoption because they can't take care of it. He is a mestizo from Chihuahua, he is 4 months old and has not received any vaccinations. I have asked the current owner if he takes it out on the street and he says yes, but little. How do I know if I have symptoms of distemper or parvo? If I pick him up, until I get his vaccinations tomorrow, can't he go outside? Thank you very much and greetings.

Hello, I have a 3-week-old dog. After a month and 1 week they gave it to me and the first thing I did was send for deworming. At 8 days they gave him the first injection and the second and third are scheduled. With just the first one and I can take her to a park where I know there are dogs but I won't leave her on the floor, she just wants to relieve herself?

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Sue.
      Yes, you can without problem.

Hi there! I have a dog without a vaccination record, its previous owner ensures that it is vaccinated and dewormed, I don't know what to do because it takes me long to give me its record, if I deworm it again and vaccinate is at risk?

    All the best
    Thank you

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Alexandra.
It's strange. When a vet vaccinates an animal, he puts it on the primer. If the previous owner does not want to give it to you, it may be because he really does not have it and, therefore, that he is lying to you when he says that he has vaccinated him, or that he has lost it (what can happen, I myself lost all those of my animals not long ago). But, even if he has lost it, if he is six months or more they can tell you if he has the rabies vaccine, which, being mandatory, comes in the information on the microchip.

So good. The first thing is to find out to see if you have the rabies vaccine. If you do not have it, and you are at the right age, you can get a pentavalent vaccine, which would protect you from the most dangerous diseases (distemper, rabies, parvovirus, parainfluenza, adenovirus).

Because of the deworming issue. Being more delicate, it would be better to wait a month, just in case.

      A greeting.

Hello I have a poodle dog today 9 days ago that I vaccinated him I have him in my room since I brought him because I have other dogs that do not sleep inside the house They have their own house because they are large my question is the following from when I could let him walk around the house not in the backyard because my mother who lives across the street had a dog with parvo and when I brought this I have it in my room I wash the floors with chlorine because I read that it can be brought into the house even in the shoes

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello barbara.
You can leave it now, the only thing I would recommend is cleaning the floor with specific products, since chlorine is very toxic to dogs.

Hello Monica, I have a question, I have a chiguagua mix with german sheper, and it is already ten weeks old until today, November 11, 2017, they finished putting the three doses of vaccines for the parvovirus distemper coronavirus, for total influence than the three doses that They have put the same thing, they put them on every two weeks starting from October 14 until today, November XNUMX, but with this last dose I got down and just crying does not want to be touched and has a lot of shaking I want to know Yes, that's normal. Oh, I forgot to tell you that the pill that I have seen mentioned by other people that is used to deworm, I have not given it, I do not know if it can be given since the vaccines were given.

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello dora.
Vaccines can have the side effects you mention, but they happen in a few hours. If it does not improve, it is best to consult a veterinarian.

Antiparasitic tablets should be given before the vaccine, but they must also be given regularly once a month or every three months (as indicated by the professional) to keep the animal free of intestinal parasites.

      A greeting.

    Hello good Morning.
I have a 53-day-old puppy, they gave her to me and in her booklet at 6 weeks they vaccinated her for parvo-virus and her deworming on the same day. (After reading your blog, I'm worried)
During that time, before they gave her to me, she was with the mother, which is why I think she breastfed after her first vaccination. Is there a problem? Would you have to start the vaccination again?
Also his schedule tells me that his next vaccination is on the day he turns 2 months.

Hello good morning, I have a husky puppy of two and a half months, but he has never received a vaccine, I must give him all the doses or those that correspond to him from his age. That is, if you are already 10 weeks old, I only put the dose of that age and I no longer put the 8-week dose and the next one would be rabies, or should I still respect the process even if it is late ???

Thank you in advance for your response

Good afternoon: A little while ago I brought a shitzu puppy to my house, the fact is that they already gave him the first vaccination and they have knocked him out and he has the chip, just need to be discharged, but I am taking him out, in my arms That is, without contact with the ground of the street so that it can give it air and the sun and it does not remain locked up all day, within five days they will give the second vaccination, it is checked and the sick dog is not there, and already I am meeting with some dogs that are perfectly healthy so that I can have contact, even if I do not have the second vaccine, what am I doing?

PS: I only put him together with two dogs that are with all their vaccines and healthy and at home so that when he goes out for a walk for the first time it is not a world for him and he relates, besides that he loves the other dogs jhehe but I'm worried about if i'm doing things wrong
