Pomsky, new breed artificially created

Two Pomsky breed dogs.

Decades ago, the craze for "designer dogs" had scientists working to create new races canines, adapted to the tastes and needs of human beings, giving rise to dogs such as the Labradoodle, the Puggle or the pomsky. This time we focus on the latter, summarizing its main characteristics and analyzing the inconveniences that artificial genetics can cause.

History gives us classic examples of canine breeds created in the laboratory with a specific objective, such as the Boxer or the German Shepherd. The birth of both dates back to the XNUMXth century, but we find much more recent samples such as the Pomsky, that came to light in 2013.

Race

Pomsky puppy

Its origin is in the United States, although it is currently gaining popularity in our country. It is a hybrid between Pomeranian and Siberian Husky (hence its name). From the first they adopt their dense hair and size, while from the second they have blue eyes and the color of their fur. Thanks to its cute appearance, which makes it look like a puppy throughout its life, the Pomsky is one of the most sought-after dogs in its native country today.

Being a new breed, has not yet been recognized, which is why it is actually still considered a mongrel dog. For this reason, there is still no set standard.

Characteristics of the Pomsky

The Pomsky dog would be something like a small Husky. Its weight is 7 to 14 kilos. It has sturdy legs, a round head with eyes that look at you sweetly. Its body is protected by a layer of semi-long and dense hair, which it wants to caress daily. The ears are large but well proportioned to the rest of the body, and are held erect or slightly hanging.

Character

Experts cannot pinpoint the details as they are still too young and in many ways unknown. However, we know that it is a playful, active animal with a high level of energy. It may be the ideal furry for sporty families, but it can be a bit difficult with those more sedentary.

Adult pomsky

Adult pomsky

It is a dog that, due to its high economic price, many scams have arisen. Although not much is known about this breed yet, we can tell you that there are two types of pomskys that are:

  • First generation: 50% Husky + 50% Pomeranian
  • Second generation: 25% Husky + 75% Pomeranian

Depending on which one we get, it will have some characteristics or others. Thus, while the first generation will be larger (9 to 14kg) and independent, the second will be somewhat smaller (7 to 9kg) and more affectionate.

Care and health

In order for our Pomsky dog to have a happy life and as long as possible, we must provide the following care:

  • Food: we have to give him high quality feed (croquettes), without cereals or by-products. A very good alternative is homemade food or Barf, but this must always be given under the advice of a specialist in canine nutrition.
  • Exercise: you have to take it out for a walk a minimum of three times a day. Each walk should last 20-30 minutes or more, as this will help you have a better time and remain calmer at home.
  • Hygiene: it is necessary to brush it daily to remove dead hair. Likewise, we must clean the teeth daily with a brush and toothpaste for dogs, and the eyes and ears twice a week with a sterile gauze.

Regarding your health, it is still unknown what diseases you may have, beyond the common of any dog (colds, flu). Even so, every time we suspect that he is unwell, we will have to take him to the vet to examine him and give him the most appropriate treatment.

Curiosities

pomsky

The Pomsky is a dog that is generally sociable and friendly, but If there are children at home, you have to look for a second generation one since those of the first tend to be afraid of the little humans. In any case, a correct socialization from puppies can help a lot to avoid future problems.

By the way, Did you know that it is more than likely that all the mothers of these dogs are Husky? This is so because, otherwise, there would be complications in the delivery.

Price

pomsky dog

Its price in its place of origin ranges between 1.500 and 5.000 dollars, while in Spain around € 600-1.000. At the moment the chances of acquiring a real Pomsky are very slim; To make sure that they are not trying to deceive us, we can resort to the Pomsky Club of America platform, which shows us a list of official breeders. We will find more information about this dog on its official website: pomsky.org.
