This beautiful one was created by Leendertt Saarloos, a Dutchman who loved dogs german shepherds. After other crosses, got the pups to have only 25% wolf blood. Later they would be known by the name of European wolfdogs. The behavior of these furry little by little was improving, so that Saarloos managed to use them as guide dogs. But it did not turn out as expected: although it had improved a lot, these dogs they are very independent and cannot be used as a guide dog.

It's about a dog very energetic, asset, independent and further very smart. With strangers he is very shy, but he can get along with them if we have socialized correctly since puppy.

Let us remember that it is not a working dog like a Mallorcan shepherd or Border Collie. It is a dog that must be avoided leaving alone for a long time, especially when young, since otherwise it will grow up avoiding people.

Saarloos Wolfdog vs Czechoslovakian: How are they different?

Both breeds come from the cross between wolves and German shepherds, so in appearance they are quite similar. But there are differences that are important to know when deciding on one or the other:

  • Personality: The Czechoslovakian he is more independent, he is more attentive to everything around him. The Saarloos on the other hand, although it does have that instinct for independence, if it is taken as a puppy it adapts well and from that age it will begin to be aware of its family.
  • Home life: the Czechoslovakian is a more nervous dog, and less affectionate than the Saarloos.
  • Exercise: the Czechoslovak needs more physical activity. It was 'created' to be a working dog. In contrast, the Saarloos does not have a specific function, so it can be a better companion dog.

How do you take care of yourself?

Food

The Saarlos wolfdog is a beautiful animal, but so that it is also healthy it is very important to give him a good quality mealOtherwise his coat will lose shine and his teeth will not be as strong as they should be. For all this, the most advisable thing is to give it a diet based on meat, since it is a carnivore. This meat can come from feed that does not have cereals, or from the supermarket.

Also, from time to time you can also give him treats; but yes, they must be suitable for the dog.

Hygiene

You have to brush his coat every day, a minimum of once, although during spring and summer they should be two or more to avoid leaving traces on the furniture. To do this, use a card for long-haired dogs, and pass it gently, without making sudden movements.

If you see that it has become very dirty, bathe it once a month, no more.

Exercise

If we take into account that wolf blood still runs through its veins (little, but it still has), we can get an idea of how important exercise is for this animal. The walks must be longbut it is recommended to take him out for a run in a fenced dog park or in the field.

"Salud"

The health of the Saarlos wolfdog It is good. It could be compared to that of a mongrel or 'thousand milk' dog, which thanks to genetic variability hardly has any major diseases. But yes, it is important (in fact, it is mandatory in many countries) to take him to the veterinarian to have him vaccinated and to have the microchip implanted.

Price

The price will vary depending on where you buy it, but more or less it may cost you $1000 bought in a kennel, and 400-600 euros to a private individual or in a pet store.
