The Effects of Caffeine in Dogs

CaffeineTaken in moderation, it can be beneficial for our body, but what effects does it have on dogs? The truth is that we should not let our dog consume any food that contains caffeine, since this substance is really poisonous for him. In large quantities, it can even seriously endanger your life.

As with chocolate, these animals are much more sensitive to caffeine than people. To give us an idea, its effects are multiplied by approximately four or five, although this proportion also depends on factors such as weight or age. Taken in a small amount, caffeine does not have to pose serious risks to your body, but in other cases there may be symptoms that require urgent veterinary attention.

Said symptom they are very varied. Among them the most common are vomiting, hyperactivity, an excessively fast heart rate, diarrhea, poisoning and spasms. The former usually appear one or two hours after having ingested caffeine, depending on the amount consumed and the physical characteristics of the dog (age, size, allergies, diet, health, etc.).

At that time we must go immediately to a veterinary clinic so that they can induce vomiting and eliminate as much of this substance as possible that has been deposited in the body. A specialist would be the only one who could help our dog at that time, because if we do not act quickly, the animal may never recover.

For all this we have to take certain precautions, such as keeping any food that contains caffeine out of reach of the dog. Remember that prevention it is the best option in this case. It should be borne in mind that this substance is not only present in coffee, but also in many soft drinks, energy drinks, ice cream and sweets. We must know that for some dogs even a tiny amount can be really dangerous.
