When is adult food given to a dog?

Dog Food

The puppy is cute: he has a very sweet and innocent face, and he does so much mischief that it is impossible to avoid laughing. But time passes, and after a few months it will become an adult dog that we will surely love even more if possible.

But When is adult food given to a dog? Or, what is the same, when, from the point of view of feeding, does it stop being a puppy?

A puppy needs a higher intake of protein, phosphorus and calcium than an adult dog. During the first months it will grow a lot and very fast, so much so that if it is given a low-quality diet, or if it is changed from puppy food to adult dogs, it is easy for it to end up having both bone problems as in your muscular system. For all this, It is extremely important, especially if we choose to give feed (croquettes) to choose brands that do not use cereals to make their feed, since these are ingredients that not only cannot digest well but can also cause food allergies and even infections in the medium / long term.

But When is it time to change your food? The truth is that there is no universal age that works for all dogs, since there are some that will become adults long before others. To give us an idea, we can orient ourselves by the weight that he will have (or that we think he can have) once he is an adult:

  • From 1 to 10kg: at 8 months.
  • From 11 to 19kg: at 9-10 months.
  • From 20 to 39kg: at 12-15 months.
  • More than 40kg: at 18-24 months.

In case of doubt, we recommend consulting a veterinarian since he will be the one to tell us how long he thinks it may take for our friend to finish growing and, therefore, when is the time to change his feed.
