Azawakh, a little-known breed of dog

Origin and history of the Azawakh

The Azawakh is a dog that has been bred by the Tuareg tribes of the south of the Sahara as a hunter (mainly of gazelles) and guardian. It is a very fast animal that cuts off prey until the human arrives, as long as necessary. After hunting and running around all day, he goes home. In Mali, for example, he can often be seen lounging under the thatched roofs of houses.

Today, however, we can find him outside the country of origin, since in the early 1970s, Dr. Pecar, from Yugoslavia, found a partner.

Physical characteristics

It is a medium-large size dog. Males are between 64 and 74cm and weigh between 20 and 25kg, and females are 60 to 70cm and weigh between 15 and 20kg. The head is long, thin, and chiseled, with a flattened cranial vault. The nose is black or dark brown, and the muzzle is long and straight. The eyes are large and almond-shaped, dark or amber in color. Their ears are triangular in shape, thin and hanging.

The body is strong, muscular, and athletic. It is covered by a short and fine coat that can be of different shades: fawn, light sand, and brindle.

Has a life expectancy of 12 years.

Behavior and personality

It is a very loyal and attentive dog with its loved ones, but it is reserved with strangers. It has a strong territorial and protective instinct, so it can be a good watchdog; But yes, this does not mean that it can be in the garden all day. In fact, If you don't live with your family, you will have a very bad time since, although he has a somewhat more independent character than that of other dogs, he does not want to be alone. In addition, it is very sensitive to cold.
