How to prevent the dog from jumping on top? III

Taking into account that there are people who like to be uploaded and others do not, we must adopt a technique to control dogs in the latter case.

In the same way as the problem that some dogs have of pulling on the leash, the fact that, especially the youngest, try to get on people, can respond to a common need: exercise.

In tackling this problem we think primarily of medium and large dogs. That a small dog like a Chiuahua or a Yorki jumps on someone is perhaps less serious, although it is still annoying... Many owners neglect the education of their dogs for the simple fact of its small size , being "more manageable" and "neutralizable" in case of need, or inappropriate behavior, but it is a pity ... I have seen in canine work clubs perform the "fuss" to little Yorkis or Cocker Spaniel and it is a wonder how well they do.

As we said, lack of exercise it is usually in many cases the root of the problem jumping on top or pulling on the leash. Working dogs like the German Shepherd, Border Collie, Giant Schnauzer, or smaller like the Cocker and many hunting dogs, they need to burn their energy. We strive to make them live in flats or on farms without giving them the necessary activity (What a dog to live on a farm if it is not forced to move is not more active ... !!, especially if it is alone, tied up or lying in a corner all day vegetating ...). Can you imagine a Yanomami Indian working all day as a bank teller behind a glass sentry box? How would it feel? well it's the same ... Many people should self-analyze before putting a dog in their life. There are more than three hundred dog breeds, and there is one for each type of person. It is about choosing the type of dog according to our needs and our lifestyle. Act intelligently, without haste, allowing yourself to be advised by an expert and without passion, is what must be taken into account when acquiring or adopting a dog.

Let's see some techniques to prevent dogs from jumping on people. We will enunciate them classifying them according to training method used, and readers will be able to choose the one that best suits them. For our part we decline any responsibility in its use, and we always advise guidance from a competent training expert:

  • Traditional method: Advocates of this type of training recommend taking pressure measures to correct this inappropriate attitude, that is, ordering "No!" the dog and dry tug on the choke collar, after waiting a moment (latency period) in case the order is not executed. Variant: dry jerk without saying anything. The dog will associate the action of jumping over an unpleasant stimulus, without relating it to its guide (owner who leads it) and will try to avoid it. Another technique: ask a collaborator to grab you by the front legs when jumping on you (without violence) without releasing you until after a few moments, forcing you to remain standing. After a few sessions of this type, free of violence, just because of the minor annoyance that it entails, the dog will decide to abandon the "practice of jumping over the passerby"
  • Positivist method: Trainers using this method practice the following: ordering "No!" and reward the dog with a small food reward for not jumping. If the food reward is also associated with a small sound, it can be useful to attract the dog's attention in committed moments, for example. when he comes across another dominant dog on the street, or we don't want him to be entertained by someone or something.

Personally I always think which If we crouch at the level of the dog's face, before it jumps, he will not do it. We can ask a friend who visits us, with him who we trust, the following: "Get down and get on his level!" The dog will not jump on you, throwing you off balance.

Another option, in this case to be used between us and our dog, is that we crouch at his height, to avoid the jump and that we accustom him to jump us only when we want to order, giving us a pat on the chest and saying: « Above!" or "Hop!"
