St. Hubert's Dog or Bloodhound

This dog is an animal traditionally used for hunting. In fact, it was created from crosses of other hunting dogs, and today it is one of those hounds with the best sense of smell. Their appearance reminds us of all the dogs of the hound family, which usually have long ears and a peaceful and wrinkled face that makes them very friendly.

This breed is perhaps not as well known as the Basset Hound, which has hundreds of photos online with its apparently sad face, but you may recognize this breed with this peculiar name. It is both known as the Bloodhound like the Dog of St. Hubert.

The second name, the most original, comes from the belief that this breed was initially created by the monks of the order of St. Hubert, in order to have a good hunting dog. Be that as it may, it is known with certainty that the origin of the dog is Belgium.

This dog has one of the sharper noses of the canine world. That is why on many occasions we have seen it as a tracking dog in the police. It is said that it can even follow the trail after several days, so it is very useful in this regard. This is also why it is widely used in hunting.

Today this breed is not usually seen as a companion dog, but rather as a working dog. But like all dogs it can be a good companion. It is good and kind to children, and requires little maintenance. The ears must be cleaned to avoid infections, and if we have a garden we must bear in mind that it is a breed that usually makes holes constantly due to its tendency towards hunting.
