It is not always easy to coexistence between different animals, so when introducing a new pet at home, it is best that we take certain precautions. Such a situation would be, for example, when we try to make a dog and a rabbit friends, something that we will achieve by following a few simple tips.
To begin with, we must be aware that the rabbit naturally plays the role of prey, while the dog is the predator, something that can be really stressful for the first. To avoid any conflict we have to make both of them put aside these roles and achieve a good relationship; even if it all depends, of course, on your individual character.
The first step is to get them used to your presence, for which in principle we will prevent them from having direct contact. This way the rabbit will not feel threatened. We must be especially careful if the dog is dominant; in that case, we will let him smell the rabbit only through his cage and with us present. If we notice aggressive behavior on his part, it is best to cut him off quickly with a sharp "NO" and remove him from the area, but if the problem continues, it is best to call a dog trainer.
After a few days, when we observe that the dog shows a receptive attitude towards the new pet, we can take the rabbit in your arms and let him smell it. If he gets too excited or tries to catch him, we will have to stop this behavior, until we get him to act calmly. That's when we can put it down, but without losing sight of the two at any time.
Faced with inappropriate behavior, we will give a firm order to the dog to stop it; We can also put the strap on it and give it a little tug, controlling it more easily. When he does the right thing, we will reward him with kind words, caresses, and food.
