Basic care of the Siberian Husky

Siberian Husky in the mountains.

Strong, elegant and loving, The Siberian Husky is one of the most striking dog breeds, thanks in large part to its beauty and imposing size. It shares great similarities with the wolf, and while it is perfect for fulfilling work functions, it can also be the ideal companion for living together. Although brave and tough, it requires some basic care.

As with any race, when a Husky is a puppy needs the vet to administer the corresponding vaccines, including deworming. Also, you should eat four times a day for the first four months of life. Thereafter and until eight months, it is reduced to three daily doses, until he turns 18, when we will begin to distribute the food twice a day.

Moreover, this dog's long and dense mane needs special care. To do this we have to get a metal bristle brush, with which we will comb it frequently (at least once a week). It is convenient that we get used to it from puppyhood. As for hygiene, it should be moderate so as not to damage your skin; the vet will know how to tell us how often we have to bathe him. However, their ears tend to get dirty, so they should be cleaned regularly with a damp cloth.

Caring for your pads is essentialEspecially if the Husky lives in a natural environment or acts as a working dog. We must check the soles of their paws every day, making sure they do not have wounds or debris. If we notice them dry and cracked, we can apply a special cream or gel for it.

As we have explained previously, it is a dog with strong muscles, so it needs long daily walks and lots of physical activity to stay fit. In addition, this breed remarkably enjoys outdoor exercise.

Hi, christian! You do very well to want to know perfectly the characteristics of a breed before getting one to see if you are going to be able to take care of it properly. I wish more people felt that responsibility towards their pets.

As for the information you ask for, you can orient yourself on our blog (there are other posts dedicated to the Husky, they are accessed through the search engine), on other Internet platforms, reading specialized books and watching documentaries on the subject. But if you want more detailed information, it is best to go to an expert in canine behavior, a veterinarian or a breeder specialized in the breed.

In this last aspect, a lot of caution is necessary, since many of these kennels are illegal, so if you decide to acquire the dog through this route it is necessary that you visit their facilities in advance to ensure that the animals are in good health and hygiene. You can also contact shelters to ask if they have a Husky to adopt.

Regarding what you comment on the space that Huskies need, it is true that they need a good dose of exercise, but as long as they walk enough they can live perfectly in a small house. Two hours a day as you indicate in your comment would be perfect, unless a professional indicates otherwise (it depends on the physical characteristics of the dog, its character ...).

A hug and good luck, surely your future Siberian wolf will be very happy with you 😉

The love that I generated in 10 years of coexistence are unforgettable, I did not find a friend so loyal, affectionate and friendly, who was irreplaceable The problem with these adorable friends is that if they go out, they are walkers and everyone loves them stay (they are stolen) Another problem is that they are affected by heat, so they should not be kept in warm-temperate climates.

Hello, how are you? I have a 1-month-old husky puppy, but it seems exaggerated to feed him 4 times a day, I only give him 2 croquettes soaked with milk in the morning and night, could you help me with that, thank you very much !!

Hello Fabian. Ideally, eat a special feed for large breed puppies in the dosage indicated on the package; You should buy them in a clinic or a specialized pet store, making sure that it has a good quality, since the feed they sell in supermarkets does not contain the necessary nutrients. You can distribute this dose three or four times a day, so your digestions will be lighter.

As for milk, it has to be specially formulated for puppies, since dogs tend to suffer from lactose intolerance, which can cause vomiting, diarrhea and other gastrointestinal irritations. Cow's milk, in fact, does not provide them with the nutrients they need.

The puppy's diet is very delicate, so it will be better that you go to a veterinary clinic as soon as possible so that they can tell you exactly what I think is the right one for your dog, taking into account not only the breed, but also the weight and size . In addition, since it is only one month old, it is advisable for the specialist to closely monitor its growth.

I'm sorry of not being of more help. It is best if a veterinarian can examine your Husky and advise you to grow strong and healthy.

      Thank you. A hug.
