Basic care of the Yorkshire Terrier

Yorkshire terriers.

The Yorkshire Terrier is the result of crossing several small breeds: the Cairn Terrier, the Skye Terrier and the Bichon Maltese. Originating in the county of Yorkshire, England, this dog is an excellent hunter, and in turn loving, active and intelligent. With an average lifespan of 14 years, this breed requires special care.

One of the most remarkable characteristics of the Yorkshire Terrier is its precious fur, which should be brushed almost daily to avoid the appearance of knots, since being very fine and soft hair is prone to tangling, especially if we decide to let it grow long. The most suitable brush is one indicated for long hair, since otherwise it could damage the animal's skin.

As for the bath, the recommended frequency would be every 20 days minimum, and can be extended to a bath every month or month and a half. Bathing him more often could irritate his hair and skin, drying them excessively. The temperature of the water should be warm, and the special shampoo for long hair, gently massaging the entire body and taking special care with the eyes and ears.

Its small size can lead to the appearance of overweight problems. Thus we must avoid eating a lot of sweets, although they are made specifically for dogs, ideally being a feed indicated for their size and dividing the recommended daily amount in two or three times a day. Of course, you should not miss out on regular exercise, consisting mainly of walking.

Generally stubborn and territorialIt is very important to offer them an adequate education since they are puppies, setting the limits (prohibiting them from ordering food from the table, learning to live with children, etc.). The best way to achieve this are games based on positive reinforcements (rewards and congratulations), never negative ones.
