Origin and history of the Italian Mastiff

Dog of the breed cane corso

Our protagonist is a dog that descends from the breed canis pugnax, a molosser dog that existed in Ancient Rome. At that time these dogs were used as war animals, since they were strong and very resistant. Fighting bears, lions and other wild animals imported to Europe were also very popular.

The first records of the Italian Mastiff date back to the XNUMXth century, a time when Italians they used it to hunt wild boar and to keep farms and pens. Later, in 1970, the systematic breeding of this breed began.

Physical characteristics of the cane corso

It is a large animal. The male weighs between 45 and 50kg and has a height at the withers of between 64 and 68cm; the female weighs between 40 and 45kg and has a height between 60 and 64cm. Its body is very robust and strong, but very elegant. It is protected by a dense, shiny and short coat with an undercoat of thin hair. Acceptable colors are: black, gray, lead, slate and light gray, light and dark fawn, fawn red or brindle.

The head is broad, and it has medium-sized, ovoid, dark-colored eyes, a black nose and a muzzle shorter than the skull. The ears are triangular, hanging, and set high. These used to be amputated, although this custom is gradually beginning to be considered illegal in many countries, including those in Europe.

Has a life expectancy of 11-12 years.

Behavior and personality of the Italian Mastiff

Despite its past as a war dog, it is a very affectionate animal, that creates a strong bond with your loved ones, and patient. In addition, he gets along very well with children, watching their movements so as not to hurt them. Of course, you also have to know that he is very athletic: You need to exercise every day.

Like all dogs, must be educated with respect and patience, from the first day you get home.

Cane corso care

Food

The Cane Corso is a large, muscular and strong dog that you have to provide a diet as protein as possible so that you can enjoy the healthiest and longest life possible. Therefore, before deciding on a brand, you need to know what ingredients were used to make the feed, something that you will know by reading the label that comes on the bag. If you see that it includes corn, oats, flours and / or by-products, it is advisable not to buy it, since these ingredients are not suitable for a carnivorous animal.

For example, some highly recommended brands are True Instinct High Meat, Ownat grain-free, or Acana, among others. The kilo is around 3-6 euros. It is more expensive than a feed rich in cereals, but for good reason: the price of meat is higher than that of cereal. Also, it is preferable to spend money on good food than on vets.

Hygiene

On a monthly basis you have to bathe him using an appropriate shampoo for dogs. DO NOT ever use a shampoo for humans, since the pH of your skin is different from what we have, and you could cause some irritation to your skin. As for the water, it has to be warm, without burning.

On the other hand, the ears have to be checked daily or every few days in search of dirt (in which case it will be removed with drops that the vet has prescribed).

Exercise

If you love going out for a long walk every day, take advantage and take your Cane Corso with you. You will both enjoy, and exercise will be great for him. Also it is very interesting to play with him indoors and / or in the garden, for example with interactive games that stimulate your mind.

"Salud"

Contrary to what one might think at first, the breed can boast of being in fairly good health. In fact, if you take him to the vet to get his vaccinations and check him every time it is necessary, and you take good care of him, it will be difficult for him to contract any serious disease. Anyway, don't let your guard down at any time, since you could suffer from gastric torsion or hip dysplasia.

When it turns 8-9 months, you can take it to castrate.
