The origin of the Rhodesian Crested Dog can be said to have taken place in the XNUMXth and XNUMXth centuries, at the time when Europeans were able to colonize South Africa, this being the only breed that can be found in South Africa. The ancestors of this dog, represented the Cape dog colony located in South Africa, that were crossed with dogs belonging to the pioneers and some hunting dogs of Hottentot that carried crest.

After having made these crosses, it was what gave rise to the birth of the dog that is currently known as the rhodesian crested dog, despite the fact that this name was used for the first time in what the years belonging to the middle of the XNUMXth century gave and it is that formerly, what is known today as a Rhodesian crested dog, had the name of lion dog, because during what was his duty as a hunting dog in those little packs, they were the ones who followed the trail of the prey tracks, as lions do, with great agility.

According to what is the Federation Cynologique Internationale (FCI) standard, the Rhodesian Crested Dog represents being a very balanced dog, has strength, muscle, agility and is active, with a fairly symmetrical appearance.

The head of this dog should not have any wrinkles while resting and what is the naso-frontal depression it has to be moderately defined. It has a black nose when the color of the eyes is dark and it can be brown when the eyes are amber.

The eyes have a round shape, with pretty shine and in addition to this, its color has a certain harmony with the tones of its fur. The ears are of a medium size, somewhat wide at the base, with rounded ends and set somewhat high.

The body of this dog is quite strong and with a lot of muscle but at the same time he is slender and has a powerful-looking back, while on the other hand, the back is very strong and slightly arched.

The chest is very deep, but at the same time it is not very wide. Its tail can be said to be of medium size insertion, thick at the base and of moderate length. The coat it has is somewhat short, with density, smooth and lustrous and the color of the same can be from light wheat to a reddish tone.

Males may have a height of about 63 and 69 cm at the withers, weighing 36,5 kg, while the females measure between 61 and 66 cm at the withers, weighing 32 kg.

When we refer to the care of this breed, it is necessary that the dog's coat be brushed every week with a rubber comb and that they can take a bath every 2 to 3 months using products for dogs, and it is also necessary for the dog to have 2 to 3 walks per day in order to maintain its muscles.
