When we have an infestation of parasites at home or in the garden, our first reaction is to buy specific insecticides, which is normal. They are quickly effective and, if used correctly, they do not have to be toxic to animals. Still, it is always going to be better to give natural products a try, because they will often surprise us, like the diatomaceous earth.

If you want to know what it is and why it is so recommended, do not stop reading 🙂.

What is diatomaceous earth?

Diatoms are fossilized microscopic algae that are composed of a transparent cell wall of silica and an inner layer of pectin. When dying, organic matter is destroyed except for silica. This is deposited at the bottom of the waters that, over time, form large deposits of fossilized algae, which is diatomaceous earth.

Thus, it is an inert non-toxic product, totally natural, which has very interesting properties for both pest control and plants.

What is its insecticidal action and how is it applied?

Diatoms they adhere to the body of parasites, especially larvae and adults, and pierce them, so that they end up dying of dehydration. In this way, it is possible to control and even eliminate a plague of parasites without the need to use products that can endanger the health and / or life of the animals.

To use them, we must know that they look like white powder, which is very fine. East it has to be sprinkled (as if it were salt) for all those places where the furry easter, such as beds, blankets, rugs, ... If the pest is in the garden, to avoid being blown away by the wind, we recommend mixing it with water and applying it with a spray bottle.

It can also be sprinkled directly on the animal up to 1 gram per kilo of weight. For example, if it weighs 2kg, we will add up to 2 grams of diatomaceous earth. Of course, you should keep the skin hydrated, as it can have a dehydrating effect.
