Why not leave your dog locked in the car

Dog inside a car.

As we have commented on several occasions, dogs are very susceptible to heat, since their perspiration system is not as effective as in humans. That is why high temperatures are dangerous for them, especially if they are locked in a car, where their effect is even more powerful. And it is that in this situation, a dog can die in less than 20 minutes.

Despite the wide dissemination of this information by various media and veterinary clinics, every year a good number of dogs die locked in a car, due to heat stroke. This is due well to the misinformation or irresponsibility of their owners, who often leave their pet "waiting" in their vehicle while eating at a restaurant, running errands, and so on.

This ignorance results in dozens of deaths every summer. We must be aware that these animals have a transpiration mechanism inferior to ours, since they only do so through the pads of their feet, panting and the few areas that have little hair, such as the belly. If we join this difficulty regulating body temperature to the fact that car windows they create a strong greenhouse effect, in a few minutes a dog locked up in this environment can be seriously damaged.

The dog would quickly become a victim of the symptoms of a heatstroke. These are increased heart rate, breathing difficulties, disorientation, vomiting, diarrhea, excessive salivation, seizures, and cardiac arrest. And although some breeds are more prone to these problems (such as the Bulldog, the Pug, the Boxer, the Pomeranian, the Husky, etc.), all dogs can die quickly within minutes of being locked in a vehicle.

For all these reasons, which are not few, we must to take precautions when traveling with our dog. It is essential that we offer you fresh water every little time, that we keep the car at a suitable temperature and stop approximately every two hours to rest (or less, if we consider it necessary).

On the other hand, if we saw a dog locked in a vehicle with symptoms of danger, we would have to call the municipal authorities and note the brand, model, registration and location of the same. Then quickly find the owner of the car and a worker from the local security department.

In case of extreme need, if we observe that the condition of the animal is serious, we have the option of smash the window or force the car door, although this can lead to some legal problems. If you have to resort to the latter, it is highly recommended to look for witnesses so that they can declare that we have opened the car with the intention of saving the dog, not with the purpose of stealing. We could also call an animal shelter to witness the situation.
