My dog is afraid of water, what do I do?

Dog swimming in the water.

El afraid of water It is a common problem in dogs, something at least curious if we take into account that all dogs are, by nature, good swimmers. However, many of them fear the shower faucet, the rain or the waves of the sea. Fortunately, we can fix it with time, patience, and a few tricks.

It is important that we find moments of tranquility and relaxation to start our therapy; the ideal is after a long walk or a session of physical activity. Thus, the dog will have released its excess energy and will accept the situation more easily.

We will put the dog in contact with him water little by little, starting with small amounts. For example, if the animal is afraid of the shower tap, it is best to put it in the bathtub with caresses and affection, offering him treats. Afterwards, we will gently wet it, draining the water with a sponge or pouring it with a small glass, avoiding the pressure of the tap. Over time, you will eventually lose your fear.

Something more complicated is the case of dogs with fear of swimming. It is best to start by wetting its back, legs, head and chest with your hand, after which we will have the dog put the lower part of the legs in the water, only until it feels comfortable. We will help each other with treats and toys, making the animal associate water with a positive experience. What we should never do is submerge it by force.

A good trick is to start in the bathtub. We will fill it and submerge the dog little by little, always holding it so that it does not sink. We will do exactly the same when we try to accustom the dog to swimming in large areas. We should never leave you alone, but we will accompany you during your bath, holding it with your hands and the strap at all times. We will always practice in places where the water does not cover us beyond the waist.

It is also essential that we choose quiet places, without current or waves. Ideally, opt for a pool, where the dog feels comfortable and controls the situation. In addition, we must show him how to get out of the water, because in the event of an accidental fall, it is key that the animal knows how to get out by itself. Likewise, we have to supervise him at all times, staying alert in case he needs our help; remember that your safety is the most important thing.
