What is Brachycephalic Syndrome in Dogs?

Pug or adult Pug.

El brachycephalic syndrome is a common disorder in snub-nosed dogs, and causes serious respiratory problems. Also called upper respiratory obstruction syndrome, it includes a series of anatomical abnormalities, which makes them more vulnerable to heat stroke and heart problems, among other diseases.

As we said, the snub-nosed breeds Like the Boxer, the Shi Tzu or the Pug, they are more prone to suffer from this syndrome, given their physical characteristics. By having the bony structure of the muzzle narrower, the air has less space to access the lungs. In addition, its windpipe is also thinner, which aggravates respiratory problems, and is often accompanied by an excessively long soft palate.

Among the first symptoms that we can observe in a dog with this syndrome, it is a very loud breath, even to appear snoring and a respiratory rate that is too fast. This problem is aggravated in humid places and in hot climates, as well as after physical activity. In more severe cases, fainting is common.

If we notice any of these signs in our pet, we must have a veterinarian examine it. The specialist will likely perform a chest radiographic study to rule out other diseases, such as pneumonia. Although if you consider it convenient you can perform other tests to confirm the diagnosis.

Fortunately, there is a surgical intervention which largely solves these symptoms. It is a modification of the nostrils, in order to facilitate the passage of air. Excess soft palate or everted laryngeal saccules can also be removed, if necessary. Also, the veterinarian may recommend the administration of bronchodilators, cough suppressants, and fast-acting glucocorticoids.

It is also important that we take some measures at home, such as using a harness instead of a collar, avoiding hot and humid environments, making sure that our dog always has access to fresh water and limiting the time of the walk.
