Although most dogs they bark to communicate, there are some races that use other sounds. This does not mean that they are sick or that they suffer from any behavior problem, but simply that their nature causes them to express themselves in this way. Here are some of the dogs that do not howl or only do it very occasionally.
The Basenji. It is a raza little known, from Africa, of medium size (usually weighing between 9 and 11 kg). Similar in appearance to that of a fox, it is very resistant to high temperatures, and of a very independent character. It is said that it was very popular in Ancient Egypt, being the favorite pet of the pharaohs. One of its most peculiar characteristics is that it does not bark, but emits a sound similar to that of a song or a howl.
The Saluki. Like the previous one, it vocalizes through moans and songs. It is one of the oldest breeds, not very popular as a pet, although the truth is that it is calm and familiar. Like its close relatives, Greyhounds and Afghan Hounds, it has great hunting skills. They are active and very agile, so they require large doses of physical exercise.
The Siberian Husky. Originally from northeastern Siberia, this breed withstands very low temperatures thanks to its dense and long coat. Both in his behavior and in his physical characteristics, he is very close to his ancestor the wolf, and howls also influence this. And it is that the Husky communicates mainly through these sounds.
The Song Dog of New Guinea. It is an endangered species, present almost exclusively in zoos. However, it is sometimes sold as a pet. Its appearance is very striking, as it resembles a fox, although it also has features reminiscent of the wolf. Like the previous ones, it is not capable of barking, but it makes sounds similar to singing or humming.
