Why does my dog lick its paws?

Bulldog licking his paws.

Sometimes dogs acquire habits that we do not understand. One of the most common is lick paws constantly, something that although it does not have to reflect a serious problem, it may be due to certain factors that we must take into account. We tell you what are the most frequent reasons that trigger this strange behavior.

1. Allergy. Many allergies are manifested in the dog through itching and discomfort in the skin of the pins. It can be caused by a wide variety of reasons, from insect bites to some chemical product that the animal has had contact with, to some foods. If we see redness, rashes or other irregularities in the area, we must go to a veterinary clinic as soon as possible.

2. Hygiene. Sometimes dogs use licking as a hygiene method. If we notice that our dog frequently licks some areas of the body, we must check if it is dirty and give it a bath to end the problem.

3. Wounds or injuries. In these cases, the licking is often accompanied by limping and apathy. Sometimes it is damage to the joints, while at other times we find wounds or nailed objects. We will have to examine the legs of our pet well and make it receive veterinary attention.

4. Parasites or fungi. The bite of some insects causes a strong itch in the dog, which it will try to soothe by biting and licking. Fleas are a good example of this. On the other hand, if the animal's legs give off a bad smell, it is most likely fungi, which can only be eliminated through proper medical treatment.

5. Absorption of vitamins. These animals lick their paws to absorb the vitamins that the sun provides them, since they do not metabolize vitamin D like we do. In his case, the vitamin accumulates in the superficial fat of his coat, without being absorbed automatically. Therefore, they resort to licking as a means of absorption.

6. Boredom or anxiety. If the dog does not get enough physical activity, he will try to calm his anxiety through this type of behavior. Licking its paws generates endorphins, "compensating" somewhat for the lack of exercise.
