Dog sports: Bikejoring

Man and dog practicing Bikejoring.

In recent years, a new sporting discipline has emerged for our dogs, called bikejoring. It consists of a modality of mushing which helps the dog to strengthen its ability to concentrate, its strength and its agility. To practice it, we will need a high-quality bicycle, a special harness, a shock absorber shot and long hours of training. And of course, the appropriate security measures.

In this discipline, one or two dogs pull our bike by means of a belt and a tow cable connected to it. Thus, they guide us during the race, which must take place on wide terrain, with little unevenness and not very stony. It is also important to avoid asphalt, to protect the animal's pads.

Is a demanding sport both with our physical form and with that of the dog. We must have previously trained and trained the dog, so that it interprets and follows our orders effectively. In addition, they must present a good state of health, reinforced with frequent physical exercise and adequate nutrition. Likewise, the Bikejoring carries some risks for both, so it is necessary to start with the hand of a professional.

Like us, the animal must adapt progressively to this training. First, with long walks and short running sessions, increasing them little by little. Once we have passed this phase, we will begin to practice this activity first with short distances, and then gradually increase them.

The Bikejoring not suitable for all dogs, since those of small size cannot participate. In addition, it is prohibited for dogs with health problems, the elderly or in the process of growth. Among the most efficient breeds for this sport we find the Australian Shepherd, the Border Collie or the Alaskan Malamute.

As we said previously, this activity can be dangerous if we do not take the proper precautions. It will be necessary for us to wear a helmet and goggles, and on stony terrain, dogs have to wear special boots. In addition, it is essential that it is a professional who teaches us to practice this sport in complete safety.
