Friar Bigotón, from stray dog to Franciscan monk

Fray Bigotón, a Schnauzer adopted by the monks of the San Francisco de Cochamba convent (Bolivia).

A few months ago, the convent of San Francisco de Cochamba (Bolivia) decided to include a new and peculiar member in its congregation. Is about Friar Whisker, a small Schnauzer rescued from a shelter. He currently lives happily with his companions as one more brother, something that thousands of users have witnessed through social networks.

Honoring Saint Francis of Assisi, patron saint of animals, these Franciscan monks have welcomed this little homeless dog into their monastery. This adoption was made possible by Cold Noses Project, a non-profit organization dedicated to defending the rights of dogs and promoting their adoption.

Although he is better known by his nickname, Fray Bigotón, his real name is Carmelo, in memory of a Franciscan parish priest who settled in Cochamba to fight for peace and justice in the country. «Here all the brothers love him very much. He is a creature of God ”, explains Fray Jorge Fernández. And it is that the animal has been able to quickly win the affection of all its companions, who not only offer it all kinds of care, but have also made its own Franciscan outfit made to measure.

The case rose to fame thanks to Cold Noses Project Facebook, achieving hundreds of followers all over the world in just a few days. In this social network we can see endearing images of the little Schnauzer, in which he is shown playing, refreshing himself and receiving the affection of his family.

“The dog has all the space he could want to play and run freely. It also has a fountain to drink and refresh whenever you want ”, affirm the Franciscan monks, who hope to serve as an example for other monasteries. In this way, and in collaboration with the animal rights organization, they try to encourage adoption by spreading your story.
