As with us, burns in dogs are divided into three levels depending on their severity, size of the affected area and depth of the same, and they are those of the first, second and third degree.

  • First degree burn: they are the mildest, and also the most frequent. They cause damage, but without affecting the functions of the epidermis (the outermost layer of the skin), so you can continue to lead a normal life.
  • Second degree burn: These wounds affect not only the epidermis, but also the dermis, which is the second layer. Blisters appear, the area becomes red, and significant pain is felt.
  • Third degree burn: they are the most serious. These burns destroy the epidermis, dermis and reach the subcutaneous cellular tissue. In these cases, the patient may be in shock or feel no pain at all, a sign that the nerve has been affected. Also, if the burn is deep, the area may be very dark red, or even charred.

How to cure burns in dogs

If the burn is superficial, the first thing we have to do is apply plenty of cold water on the area, either directly or by moistening a clean gauze. If you opt for the latter, do not rub, apply gentle taps. You also can't put ice on the burn, as it would further injure it from the cold.

Once the area is very humid, we will proceed to applying an antibiotic ointment or honey to avoid infection. If necessary, you can trim the hair in the area to make it easier for you. Then you have to bandage the area. The bandage has to be renewed every day, and it is also important to clean the wound with water daily. To prevent you from taking it off, you can put an Elizabethan collar on it.

In cases of severe burns, You have to go immediately to the vet.
