How long is the life of a dog?

Small dogs tend to live longer than large dogs

As we know, unfortunately the life expectancy of a dog is much shorter than what we can have. Although we do not like to think about it, it is important that we always keep it in mind since it it will help us to fully enjoy every moment we spend with him. In addition, it should also be one more reason to avoid that furry ending up in the wrong hands.

But How long is the life of a dog? Although it will depend on several factors, we can know more or less how many years our friend will stay with us.

A matter of size

Interestingly, oversized dogs like the German Shepherd, the Golden Retriever, the Labrador, etc. have a shorter life expectancy than those that are smaller, such as the Bichon Maltese, the Yorkshire Terrier or the Mallorcan thief, among others. Thus, while the former live 10-14 years, the latter can exceed 20.

Genetics, a lot to say

Genetics is also decisive. A crossbreed dog will always outlive a purebred one. Why? Because when it comes to obtaining the characteristics that define a breed, what is usually done is to cross close relatives. Selective breeding has an important advantage and that is that it protects the breed, but it also has drawbacks such as vulnerability to serious diseases such as stomach torsion or hip dysplasia, both very common in large breed dogs.

Without forgetting the care

The care we provide them will be the key that will end up telling us how long they will live. For this reason, it is highly recommended (in fact, it should be mandatory) that the dog lives with us in the same house, and that we give it a lot of love every day; plus of course water, quality food and your daily walks.

Large dogs tend to have a shorter life expectancy than small ones

I hope it has been useful to you 🙂.
