Puppies are adorable furry, but also very vulnerable. So much so that one of the first things we have to do as soon as we adopt them is to take them to the vet to be dewormed, since it is very likely that they have worms.
These internal parasites can cause a lot of problems for them, so let's see how to eliminate worms in puppies.
How are worms that can affect puppies?
Earthworms that affect puppies and dogs in general they can be round, which are nematodes, and flat, which are tapeworms or cestodes. Both types of intestinal parasites live in the organs of animals, usually in the intestines, but can also be in the heart, lungs and other vital organs.
Before giving the treatment to our furry it is very important that we know what type of parasite we are dealing with, since not all respond the same to the same treatments.
What are the symptoms of pinworms in puppies?
Puppies have immature immune systems, so their health can quickly deteriorate if they have roundworms. The most common symptoms are:
- Apathy
- Diarrhea
- Hair loss
- Weight loss
- Bulging belly
- Anemia
- Loss of shine in the coat
- Nervousness
If our friend has one or more symptoms, we must take him to the vet.
How do they spread?
The feces of infested dogs are the main source of contagion; Now, if we have a dog that has worms and another does not, the latter could end up sick if drastic hygiene measures are not taken, such as washing the beds daily and scrubbing the floor with hot water. Likewise, you have to be very careful also if there are children in the house, as they could also be infected.
When and how to deworm puppies?
The puppies They have to be dewormed for the first time when they are between 21 and 30 days old, and again every 45 days or according to the guideline indicated by the veterinarian. For this, we can give him an antiparasitic syrup (if you are in Spain, he may give you Telmin Unidia, which you must administer for 5 days).
At two months of age we can put a complete antiparasitic pipette, such as Stronghold or Advocate. The pipettes are small bottles of about 3cm of transparent plastic in which the antiparasitic liquid is located. It is effective for one month, and keeps the animal protected from both external parasites (fleas, ticks, mites) and internal ones.
