Have you heard of the canine pyometra? Is your dog suffering from it and would you like to know what you have to do to improve it? Taking care of a pet is not only about feeding it, but also protecting its health and taking it to the vet whenever you need it.

Dogs can have many diseases, this condition being one of the most dangerous for females. For this reason, we are going to tell you how to know if my dog has pyometry.

What is the pyometer?

Pyometry is a non-contagious infectious disease caused by an infection in the uterus in which secretions and pus accumulate. It is very common in bitches that have reached sexual maturity and have not been neutered.

There are two types:

  • Open: it is when all the purulent material comes out through the vagina.
  • Closed: occurs when the cervix has already closed, so there is no vaginal discharge.

What are the symptoms?

The most common symptoms of pyometra in bitches are the following:

  • Loss of appetite: the furry girl has little desire to eat, and when she finally decides she chews without much encouragement.
  • Weight loss: If you eat little, you will lose weight.
  • Lethargy: Loses interest in things that you used to love, such as walks or games. Spend more time in your bed.
  • Vaginal secretions: In the case of open pyometra, a mucous to bloody discharge will be observed that could be mistaken for heat.
  • Shock and septicemia- If left untreated, a generalized infection would be triggered that could be life-threatening for the bitch.

How is it treated?

The most recommended treatment in mild cases, that is, in those in which a generalized infection has NOT occurred, is the ovariohysterectomy which is the removal of the ovaries and uterus.

In severe cases, it will be treated with antibiotics, as well as to drain and clean the uterus.
