How to prepare the entrance of a new dog at home

White haired puppy

Are you planning to increase your family with a four-legged furry? Do you already live with another dog and would you like to bring another one so that they could play? Whether you are in one situation or another, this time I am going to help your new friend have a good start with you and his new human family.

So let's see how to prepare the entrance of a new dog at home.

Situation # 1 - The dog is going to live in a family without animals

If there are no animals in your family and what you want is to bring a dog to live with you, it is important that leaving your »old» home is as normal and joyful as possible. Therefore, you have to take a bag of dog treats with you, and give it from time to time so that it is happy and happy.

It's advisable avoid going directly homeespecially if you are a little nervous or restless. So, if he has the vaccinations up to date, I advise you to take him for a walk around the surroundings, and then go to the house, where they will surely be waiting for you 🙂.

Once at home, you have to let him explore it in peace, room by room, and teach him where to sleep, and where he has his feeder and drinker, because if it is not done now, then if he starts to get on the sofa without permission it can be difficult to remove that habit.

Situation # 2 - The dog goes to live in a family where there are dogs

If you already have a dog and you want another, what you have to do is, before going home, take a walk with the new one around so that it is calm and relaxed. In this way, when it is time for introductions, it is most likely that problems will not arise.

Before entering the door of the house, and for safety, ask someone to leash your »old» dog. This is especially important if your "old" friend has not had contact with other dogs before, or when you don't know how they will react. To avoid any problem, you can take advantage of walk with both dogs, because? Because that way they will meet in a neutral environment for both, in a territory that neither of them will need to control. Go giving prizes to both dogs so that they start to socialize, to become friends.

When you finally see that both of you are calm, then it will be time to go home. Once there, The straps will be removed and they will be allowed to interact.

Of course, in the event that problems arise, they will separate and the "new one" will be taken to a room where he will have food, water, a bed and a blanket. The "old" dog should also have a blanket, since both should be exchanged 3 times during 3 days, so that they get used to the other's body odor. From the fourth day, you will put the leashes on them and try to introduce them again, being calm, and giving them lots of dog treats if they behave well, that is, if they wag their tail happily, if they are curious about the other, if they do not teach the teeth or hair stand on end,… in short, if they show a friendly attitude.

If all goes well, you can let them go, but if not, it will be better to keep the »new» separated from the »old» for a couple of days more, and consult with a dog trainer who works positively if in a week progress has not been made .

Cheerful dog

And, enjoy your »new» dog! 🙂
