How to stop my dog from stealing food

Yorkshire Terrier breed dog

The dog is an animal that is characterized, in addition to being sociable and affectionate, a glutton. Obviously, there are exceptions, but anyone who has ever lived with a furry person or is now living with one knows that as soon as they get a chance they will eat anything; yes, yes, anyone, regardless of whether it is served on a clean plate or has been found on the floor.

Therefore, more than once we have asked ourselves how to stop my dog from stealing food, so let's see what we can do to stop it.

Always feed him in his bowl

From the first day you get home you have to get used to always eating from your bowl. This means that we don't have to give him food between meals (Unless we are training it and use dog treats of course).

The ideal thing for your health is that we fill your feeder with homemade food, as this will ensure that you have good growth, excellent development and better health; But of course, if we do it like this we can risk that one day he starts stealing food. Therefore, to reduce the risk it will be better to give feed, but yes, not just anyone, but one that does not have cereals or by-products.

Teach him to be calm while you eat

Every time the family eats the dog, they have to remain calm, whether in their bed, on the sofa or wherever they like to be the most. You don't have to be near the table asking for food, nor does the family have to give him food either.

What has to be done is teach you to be in your place. It takes time, but being constant and patient it is achieved. You just have to do the following: before eating, you have to take the furry to the place where it is going to be and you will be asked to "Quiet". We say "very well" (in a cheerful tone of voice), and we go to the table.

If he comes, we will do the same again. To make it easier for you, we can give you a toy.

Don't let him steal food or take it off the street

If the dog has already stolen food from the container you can spray said container with dog repellent in order to lose interest in garbage. We will find these products in pet stores, as well as in shopping centers.

On the other hand, if we go outside we have to be observing the ground well to be able to anticipate our friend's reaction. If we see something you might like, we will surround it. While we do, we will show the dog a dog treat but we will not give it to him; This will be when we have finally left that "food" behind.

Dog with dysplasia

Thus, little by little, he will stop stealing food 🙂.
