How to teach a dog not to chew on plants

Dog in the garden

The dog is a furry one that chews the leaves of specific plants to clean its stomach, but when it starts to spoil the ones we have in the garden or on the balcony we have to worry, especially if we usually treat them with chemicals.

To avoid unpleasant surprises and problems, it is important to take a few steps. Therefore, I am going to explain to you how to teach a dog not to chew on plants.

Spend time

One of the reasons a dog spoils plants and burrows holes in the garden is boredom. If you spend a lot of time alone, or if your family does not take you out for a walk or exercise, the animal will choose to do things that it should not to burn, somehow, all that energy that is accumulating throughout the day and weeks.

Regardless of how big you are, the dog has to go for a walk and exercise every day. If you are a furry with a high energy you will always prefer to run than walk, but if the family cannot, at home you can (and in fact, should be) tired with games, sniffing sessions, and even with the training.

Protect the dog from your plants

If you have plants, do not treat them with synthetic products. They are harmful to the environment and also to your dog. Use organic homemade products (in our other blog Gardening On you will find a lot of information about organic farming). This way you will be able to have a healthy garden and a dog that, even if it occasionally bites a leaf, nothing will happen to it.

Teach him not to bite them

Every time you see him bite a leaf, say a firm NO (but without yelling), wait ten seconds and give him a toy. You will have to be very consistent, but in the end you will see positive results.

To help you understand, you can spray near the plants (not on the pots, but next to them) with a repellent for dogs that you will find for sale in pet stores and in nurseries.

With these tips, the furry will understand that it cannot bite the plants.
