How to treat a poisoned dog

White boxer

The dog, being a very gluttonous animal, can sometimes swallow things that it should not. Things that could put your life in danger unless we act quickly. But, What do we have to do so that our friend can recover as quickly as possible?

If we find him foaming a lot at the mouth, with breathing problems, and / or with any other symptoms that make us suspect that he has ingested a poison, it is important that we know how to treat a poisoned dog.

How can a dog get intoxicated?

The furry can be poisoned in three different ways:

  • Cutaneous: when the poison comes into contact with the skin.
  • respiratory: when the dog inhales it.
  • Oral: when ingested.

There are many products that we have at home that can be fatal for our friend, such as: medicines for humans, poisonous plants (such as Poinsettia or Calathea), alcohol, tobacco, car maintenance products, herbicides, insecticides and chemical fertilizers, or cleaning products.

Symptoms of poisoning in dogs

When a dog has had contact or ingested a toxic or poisonous substance, it may experience one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Excessive salivation
  • Weakness
  • Fever
  • Seizures
  • Respiratory distress
  • Muscular stiffness
  • dizziness
  • Cough
  • Tremors
  • Loss of appetite
  • Excessive thirst

If we detect any of these symptoms, it is very important to go to the vet as soon as possible, or call him to go home if he offers home services. However, we can give you first aid ourselves.

Helping a poisoned dog

The steps are as follows:

  1. We will take you to a room ventilated and illuminated.
  2. We will contact the vet to inform you about the poison that the dog has ingested, to tell us what to do, since if it has ingested something corrosive, or if it is fainted or very weak, we cannot make it vomit under any circumstances, as it could suffer internal burns .
We will not give you any liquid or food until we know what to do.
  3. In the event that we have to make you vomit, we will give you 1ml of hydrogen peroxide for every kilo of weight diluted in water in equal parts with a syringe without a needle. If you have not vomited in 15 minutes, we can give you a second dose, but no more.
  4. If you have been intoxicated through the skin, we will clean the area brushing it and cutting, if necessary, that piece of fur.
  5. In the event that the poison has had contact with eyes, skin or mucous membranes, we will clean it with abundant water.
  6. When you're better, we'll give you fresh water if the vet indicates it.
