How to walk my dog

People walking a dog

To have a dog is to have an incredible friend who, like us, needs to go outside and get some exercise. Your happiness, as well as your health depends a lot on these outputs, so it is important that they are pleasant.

The jerks, the screams, and any other show of power from the human side, the only thing that is going to achieve is that the animal pulls even more on the leash or that it feels so bad that it does not feel like walking. Taking this into account, we are going to explain how to walk my dog.

Use harness and leash

Some people think that the dog harness should only be used if the animal is a sled dog because otherwise it will want to pull more, but nothing is further from the truth. If we hook the strap to the collar, what will happen is that if the dog pulls the force of the impact will fall on the neck, so it could hurt and end up pulling more to try to avoid feeling discomfort again; On the other hand, if we hook it to the harness, the impact will fall on the upper part of the chest, which is a much less fragile area than the neck.

Bring treats

If we want the dog to really enjoy the walk every so often we have to give him a prize, either in the form of a treat, a caress, and / or beautiful words. Get up every so often, call him and give him a hug, yes, in the middle of the city or town, and yes, even if he has spent the whole way pulling. It does not matter if someone sees you, what matters is to show your friend how much you love him so that the walk is pleasant for both of you.

Correct him, but with respect and patience

Screaming and so on won't do any good. If your dog is very nervous and barks at all the other dogs that you come across, try the following:

  1. Always keep treats on hand or in an open pocket.
  2. If you see -before the dog- another canine approaching, stop.
  3. Give your dog treats. This way he will associate the other furry with something positive (food).
  4. If he barks, count 10 seconds and give him a treat again. During those seconds it should not bark.
  5. Repeat these steps every time you see a dog.

You have to have a lot of patience and be very constant, but over time you will get results 😉. Still, if you need more help, don't hesitate to ask a positive trainer.
