Songs inspired by dogs (II part)

Man playing guitar with his dog.

A few months ago we commented on the influence of dogs in the world of music, listing five known songs inspired by this animal. This time we continue with this infinite list of melodies, collecting different eras and musical genres. We briefly summarize each of them.

1. "Seamus", by Pink Floyd (1971). David Gilmor, vocalist, guitarist and songwriter for the British band Pink Floyd, was the one who came up with this song. It is a tribute to Seamus, the dog of his friend, singer-songwriter Steve Marriott, whom he cared for for a time. Whenever Seamus heard someone sing or play an instrument, he howled and barked in time to the music, earning him the spot of the fifth unofficial member of the group. So much so that the artists decided to include their barks in the fifth track on their album "Meddle", which they named precisely the dog.

2. "My Dog and Me", by John Hiatt (2003). The American singer and songwriter refers in this song to the extraordinary friendship that human beings can establish with our dogs. Talk about how these animals change our lives and how much we can come to love them.

3. "Callejero" by Alberto Cortéz (1989). Argentine composer, singer and poet, Alberto Córtez talks about Fernando, a stray dog who lived in the town of Resistencia, province of Chaco (Argentina). It never had an owner, but the residents of the area took turns taking care of it and it was well received in any place or house. Despite being so loved, sadly one day he appeared badly wounded, after having received a beating by a criminal who was never identified.

Fernando passed away and two public monuments were erected in his honor. Every anniversary of his death, the neighbors bring flowers and offerings to his grave, which reads: "To Fernando, a little white dog who, wandering through the streets of the city, awakened a beautiful feeling in countless hearts." Alberto Córtez makes his particular tribute in this song with verses like this one: “Although it belonged to everyone, it never had an owner who determined its reason for being. Free as the wind was our dog and from the street where it was born.

 4. "Man of the hour", by Norah Jones (2009). The American singer dedicates this song to Ralph, her poodle. In it he makes it clear that if he has to choose between his dog and a man, the animal will always win. “I know you will never bring me flowers. The flowers will only die. And even if we are never going to shower together, I know you will never make me cry ”, reads one of his stanzas.

5. «Broken tail», by Gepe (2013). Argentine singer-songwriter Daniel Alejandro Riveros Sepúlveda, better known as Gepe, composed this song in honor of Victoria, a stray dog whom he adopted years ago. With this work the composer intends to “create awareness about abandoned animals”. In addition, he has donated all the rights of the subject to the organization “Union of Friends of Animals”.
