There are several theories about the origin of the Komondor. One of the most popular is that it came to Hungary in 896, when the Magyar tribes of prince Arpad settled in the puszta (Hungarian steppe). On the other hand, it is believed that it was the Mongols who took it with them when they invaded the country in the XNUMXth century. While another theory says that they come from the Cumans, a nomadic people of Turkey; in fact, komondor it means "dog of the Cumans."

In any case, it is known that these dogs were used to protect livestock during the XNUMXth century. Something for which their characteristic coat is perfect, because thanks to it they could easily be confused with sheep. In addition, it served as a shield against the fangs of wolves and other predators.

Regarding its temperament, the Komondor is territorial, protective and brave. He tends to be suspicious and reserved with strangers, although very loyal to his own. Very independent, it is recommended to socialize him from puppyhood and carry out training based on positive reinforcement. Nervous and dynamic, he needs a good dose of physical exercise to keep himself physically and psychologically balanced.

This dog is usually in good health, although it is one of the dog breeds most likely to suffer hip dysplasia and stomach torsion. Occasionally it tends to present otitis and dermatitis, so it is important that we maintain good hygiene and take care of its coat. In this sense, you should not brush, but manually separate each dreadlock to prevent tangling.
