The Magellanic Sheepdog

Magellanic Sheepdog.

Among the less common canine breeds we find the so-called Magellanic Sheepdog. Coming from Chile, it is a medium-sized dog that stands out for its high vitality and its abundant coat. With a cheerful and courageous character, it has been widely used throughout history to care for the herd, and has a strong protective instinct. We tell you more about this animal.

The origin of the Magellanic Sheepdog dates back to late nineteenth century, and is located in the Magallanes area. It is believed that they came from the hand of new settlements, by people who used these dogs to take care of their flocks. Little by little they were crossing with natural specimens of the Chilean region, giving rise over the years to this curious breed.

They are characterized by their adorable appearance, being a medium-sized dog, pointed ears and abundant fur. It is strong and agile, very hard-working, and withstands low temperatures with great resistance. He can walk for long hours, and he loves to exercise outside.

Although it usually presents a docile and kind character, it can become somewhat stubborn. It learns obedience commands easily, as it is an intelligent and dynamic dog. Due to its high energy, it needs a good dose of physical activity, although it does not commonly develop behavioral problems.

It is usually in good health, but needs some special care due to its large volume of hair. Must brush it frequently to prevent knots from forming as well as keep it clean. In addition, it is convenient that we cut it when the months of high temperatures begin and that we remain very attentive to possible heat strokes.

As we said at the beginning, it is not a very well known breed internationally. In fact, currently there are not many copies, being even in risk of extinction. However, in Chile he is a true celebrity, to the point where the city of Punta Arenas has a statue built in his honor, "Monument to the Sheepdog", which refers to the importance of his work as a herd keeper.
