Main symptoms of hyperthyroidism in dogs

Like us, dogs can also suffer from thyroid problems, the gland responsible for secreting certain hormones to regulate metabolism. In the case of hyperthyroidism, is a disorder that favors the excessive production of this hormone, leading to problems such as weight gain. It is the most common endocrinopathy in dogs, after diabetes and Cushing's syndrome.

What is canine hyperthyroidism?

Es a disorder produced by the thyroid gland, which produces more thyroid hormones than it should, leading to serious problems for the endocrine system. It can easily be confused with hypothyroidism, which means the opposite; that is to say, the insufficiency of these hormones.

Why does it occur?

There are different causes. It could be due to a malformation in the thyroid gland, as well as the appearance of a tumor next to it. On the other hand, sometimes a disorder occurs in the immune system known as "autoimmune thyroiditis", which attacks the tissues that line the gland. In turn, this, to defend itself from the attack, secretes an excess of hormones until the animal develops hyperthyroidism.

According to experts, medium and large breeds are more prone to hyperthyroidism than small ones. Likewise, it occurs more frequently in females, although it can also occur in males. Some of the breeds most at risk are the Golden Retriever, Labrador, Irish Setter, Cocker Spaniel, Doberman, and Airedale Terrier.

Main symptoms

1. Weight gain.
2. Depression and anxiety.
3. Apathy and tiredness.
4. Loss of fur.
5. Infections.
6. Extremely dry skin.
7. Slow heart rate.

If we notice any of these symptoms, we must go to the vet as soon as possible. Only he can make a correct diagnosis through a blood test and administer the appropriate treatment.

Transmission

Hyperthyroidism has no cure, although its symptoms can be controlled with medication. Most of the time the treatment consists of the administration of a daily tablet for the rest of the animal's life. However, the veterinarian can recommend other treatments if he deems it necessary.
