Pyrenees mountain, characteristics and behavior

Pyrenees Mountain.

Among the classic mountain breeds we can highlight the so-called Pyrenees mountain, thanks to its great beauty and imposing size. Also known as the Giant Dog of the Pyrenees, it is said that it descends from the Tibetan Mastiff or the Tibetan Mastiff, and that it was used to defend the flock and the properties of the shepherds. Strong and calm, it is perfect as a defense dog and as a pet at the same time.

It is believed that this breed arrived in Europe with the Asian invasions and with the Phoenician merchants who settled in the Spanish Pyrenees. As early as the fourteenth century, writings appeared in which they spoke of this dog, and in which it is explained that it was used to defend the castles of Foix, Orthez and Carcassonne. It also served as a pack dog and protected the herds. It is also believed that he collaborated with the French army during World War II transporting packages and carrying messages.

However, previously, in the seventeenth century, this dog enjoyed a special distinction, since King Louis XIV awarded him the distinction of Royal Dog. For this reason it became a pet of the aristocracy and nobility. Finally, the official recognition of the breed by the FCI (the largest canine organization in the world) would take place in 1955.

Regarding his character, he is usually calm and affectionate, although his protective instinct keeps him constantly alert. He is distrustful of strangers and somewhat stubborn, which makes his training somewhat more complicated. It usually presents a balanced behavior, although for this you need a good dose of physical exercise in the open air.
The Pyrenees Mountain tends to be independent, but he also really enjoys the company of his family. In addition, it is essential that it be socialized from a puppy, since they do not always get along with other dogs.
