Red legs: possible causes and treatments

Many conditions can cause the soles of our dog's paws turn red, which is usually associated with irritation and stinging. The causes of this problem can be many and varied, and should always be determined by a veterinarian. It is very important that we do not apply home remedies on our own, as we can further damage the area.

One of the most common causes is contact with irritants such as floor cleaners or chemicals used on lawns. Also called "irritant contact dermatitis," it does not affect all dogs equally, and requires immediate shampooing and a visit to the vet.

The reddish color on the legs can also be caused by a allergic contact reaction to a natural or chemical substance. Some of the most conflictive components in this sense are wool, rubber and dyes, although this depends greatly on the peculiar characteristics of our dog. Medication will need to be given to make the problem go away.

The same is true of ingestion or inhalation allergy, which can be caused by pollen, mold, fungi, dust mites ... among many other substances. The immune system of these animals reacts by releasing histamine, which causes itching throughout the body, including the legs.

La yeast infection (a substance that naturally contains the skin of dogs) also causes this reaction. It usually affects the soles of the legs, as this is a humid area with little circulation. The symptoms are itching and swelling, and requires the administration of antihistamines.

Sometimes the red legs have nothing to do with infections and irritations, but with the dog's own licking. You may adopt this habit for anxiety or boredom, which we will solve with greater attention and exercise.

HELLO I have a German Sable Sheepdog, whose legs are only very red and even blisters between the toes of the legs that then burst and bleed a lot. what should I do? The local vet made me give him 'cephalexin duo' and told me it's inflammatory dermatitis. Please help

Hi Liliana. As I am not a veterinarian, I cannot tell you if the treatment your veterinarian has recommended is appropriate. If your dog does not improve after the time indicated by the professional, I would advise you to seek a second opinion. I'm sorry of not being of more help. A hug!

My female pug has suffered from reddish legs for a long time, I took her to a vet and he gave me spray and ointments and she is still the same / we thought of giving her packets of pedrigui food and she was very badly allergic to that product and we continue to take her vet and still the same

Hello Graciela. Since your pug does not improve with the veterinarian's treatment, I advise you to seek a second opinion as soon as possible. Hope that way you can solve the problem soon. Thanks for comment. A hug.
