How to scold the dog correctly

Man scolding his dog.

While it is true that we should not allow certain behaviors to our dog, we must recognize that scold him in the right way is not an easy or pleasant task. We have to find the right time for it, use a firm but soft tone of voice, and of course, never resort to physical punishment. These are the keys to scold the dog correctly.

We must understand that scolding the dog consists of correct their behavior, never in punishing him with the intention of making him "reflect." These are methods rather applicable to humans, whereas dogs learn through another kind of education. In their case, the punishments only make the situation worse and emotionally unbalanced.

For starters, there is no use scolding a dog hours after it has misbehaved. This way you don't know associate our reaction with their actions, so we can create confusion in your education. If, for example, we scold him when he is having fun with one of his toys for something bad that he has done previously, the animal may associate his toy with a negative experience and will not approach him again.

On the other hand, it is important to clarify that fighting is not the same as yelling or getting angry. The intensity of the correction must be firm but calm, otherwise we will create insecurity and fear in our dog. Ideally, we should use few words: a simple "no" or "stop" it will suffice. The goal is to associate this word with something negative.

After this reprimand, we will have to show the dog what to do, as a correction mode. If, for example, we find him chewing on one of our shoes, we should briefly "scold" him and then show him the toys he can play with.

As we said before, the blows and the screams are totally ruled out. We should also avoiding isolation as punishment. Perhaps locking up our dog for a while seems like a good idea, but the reality is that this can cause great confusion and sadness.

Finally, we will need good dose of patience to correct the bad behavior of our dog. If we act with respect, serenity and affection, we will be able to educate our pet without damaging its self-esteem or harming it at all.
