What is Shaker syndrome?
It is a disease that consists of an inflammation of the cerebellum, which is the part of the nervous system responsible for coordinating movements and voluntary contractions of muscles.
Although it is not possible to know for sure why it appears, it is known that if the animal suffers from a central nervous system disorder and / or if it has white fur, it will have a greater probability of suffering from it.
What are the symptoms and their diagnosis?
There is only one single symptom: diffuse, general tremor that does not stop quickly. As there is only one, in order to make the diagnosis the veterinarian has to do a urine, blood and electrolyte level analysis, as well as take a sample of the cerebrospinal fluid. Likewise, it will ask us when it began to shake in this way and how it has developed.
How is it treated?
Once the professional has been able to make a diagnosis we can even hospitalize the dog to stabilize it. In addition, he will begin to treat you with cortisone, which is an anti-inflammatory that will reduce the inflammation of the tissues. Thus, it is possible that it will improve in a week or so, but it could also get worse, which is why you should always follow the advice of the professional.
Is there any way to avoid it? Not 100%. A good diet (without cereals) and basic care (walks, games, affection, hygiene) are very important for the animal to enjoy good health and a better quality of life, but unfortunately it is not enough to reduce the risk of suffering from Shaker syndrome.
