El Norwich Terrier or Norwich Terrier It is a small dog belonging to the terrier group, a relative of breeds such as the Yorkshire or the Fox Terrier. Coming from the English county of Norfolk, it was formerly used for burrow hunting, thanks to its excellent agility and developed sense of smell. Intelligent and cheerful, it is currently not very well known and its reproduction is scarce.
Origin of the Norwich Terrier
As we said previously, this breed was born in norfolk county, east of England, like the Norfolk Terrier. Both were very popular in the area at the end of the XNUMXth century, as they were used to hunt small rodents. They differ only by the shape of their ears; while the Norfolk has them down, those of the Norwich Terrier are upright. This was the detail for which they would end up being considered as two different varieties years later.
Main features
The Norwich has a standard height at the cross of between 25 and 26 cm, and its weight is around 5 kg. Their fur is hard and rough, and it can be of different shades, such as black, gray, reddish or brown. Their eyes are small, dark and oval, and their ears are small and erect. Its body is compact and strong, with a high-density bone structure. For all these reasons, this dog greatly resembles the Yorkshire Terrier, being often confused with him.
Behavior
Es loving and sociable, very faithful to yours. Cheerful, active and intelligent, he has great self-confidence. He is fearless, agile and energetic, and retains a strong hunting instinct. He loves being outdoors and, although he can be stubborn, he can easily learn training commands. He is territorial, distrustful of strangers, and protective of his loved ones.
Health and care
It is a very nervous dog, so it needs good doses of physical exercise, like games and long walks. It needs regular brushing, given the characteristics of its hair, as well as frequent cleaning of the teeth, ears and eyes. He is usually in good health, his life expectancy being between 12 and 14 years.
