Among the sports that we can practice with our dog we find the canicross, one of the best known modalities of mushing. Unlike the latter, this activity does not require a sled or snow to do it, but consists, in general terms, of running with our pet tied around the waist using a special harness. This discipline has been consolidating in Spain in recent years, and is usually practiced on gravel, although it can also be carried out on soft snow and with the use of snowshoes. Its practice requires the use of some accessories, as well as basic notions of mushing. In addition, we must bear in mind that not all races are appropriate for it, since it requires certain strength and physical conditions.
One of the great benefits of this sport is that it helps us to strengthen the relationship with our pet, as well as to increase confidence, since its practice involves dividing the effort between both. It also prevents health problems for both us and the dog, such as obesity, heart disorders or muscle weakness.
If we want to start in the canicross, we will need to purchase a shooting harness specifically designed for this sport. It must be safe and padded, and can be complete (covers the entire spine) or medium (covers half). We will also need a lumbar belt, that we will carry; it is important that it is padded to avoid injury. And lastly, a shooting line, ideally made of nylon, which will join us with the dog while we run.
It is essential that we begin to practice this sport little by little, submitting ourselves to gradual training in which neither we nor the animal is harmed. An important part of the process is to reinforce the training orders in our dog, since it must be able to understand us when we indicate a change of direction or speed.
