The ball game is one of the most common and funniest for our dog. He enjoys going out for a run in search of his favorite toy to, once in his mouth, come to us and give it to us or, rather, make him give it to us. The truth is that sometimes it is not easy to let go, but with patience everything is possible.
And if you don't believe me, I'm going to tell you how to teach my dog to fetch the ball so you can follow the steps and get your friend to learn to let go.
Things to Know
The ball is his »treasure»
It is her favorite toy, and therefore she is not going to put it down just like that. It is very important that you offer him something in return that he likes even more than the ball, as a treat for dogs (I recommend the ones that have a bacon flavor, since they are more smelly).
You need to be patient
Each dog has its own learning pace. We can't expect you to learn something in two days when you need 10 or more. Only with respect, affection and a lot of patience will you get your furry to learn all the tricks you want.
Start at home
When you want to teach the dog something new, it is always better to start at home as this is where there is much less stimulation. Little by little you can practice in the garden and, later, in the dog park or on the beach.
How to teach him to fetch the ball
- The first thing you have to do is give the order »sit». If he gets nervous, ask him for a "still."
- Then throw him the ball and let him go get it.
- Then ask him for a »come» to get closer to you.
- Then, Ask him again for a "sit".
- Now put Hand just below the muzzle and indicate the command "release." If he doesn't let go, repeat the command every 10-20 seconds for a minute. In case there is no way, show him a treat and when you see that he opens his mouth, say "let go."
- Once the ball is in your hand, give him the treat.
Repeat several times throughout the day until he learns to release the ball.
Thus, little by little he will let you share his »treasure» with him 🙂.
