How to teach a dog to sit

attentive dog

The act of sitting is something that, being natural in dogs, it is very easy to show it to you since we only have to ask him and associate a word with the act. It is very important that you learn it as it can be especially useful during walks or when there are visits at home, and even more if you plan to enroll it in a canine sports club.

If you don't know how to get your furry to sit every time you ask, don't worry. We tell you how to teach a dog to sit.

Things you will need

First of all, it is convenient to prepare everything you will need. It is not much, but it will be of great help for your dog to feel:

  • Dog treats: they have to be very fragrant so that the animal is attracted to them. I personally recommend the ones with bacon flavor: he loves them.
  • Patience: each dog has its own learning rhythm, so if you see that it costs a little to learn it, don't worry, you will achieve it little by little.
  • Constancy: if you want me to learn something, you have to work every day. Sessions of 2 or 3 minutes three or four times a day will be essential to achieve your goal.
  • RespectScreaming, sudden movements or mistreatment won't do any good, only that the dog ends up being afraid of you.

Step by step

  1. Chop the treats if they are large. The pieces have to be small enough that the dog simply has to swallow them (without chewing).
  2. Once done, call your friend with a cheerful voice.
  3. Now show him the treat and run it up his nose (almost as if you want to brush it) to the back of his head. Keep it at a low height so that it sits.
  4. If you don't quite sit down, push it gently (It will be enough to place a couple of fingers on the lower part of the back, near the tail, and make a little downward pressure).
  5. Once you have sat down, tell him 'sit' or 'sit' and give him the treat.
  6. Repeat these steps several times for 2-3 minutes about three or four times a day.

Tips

  • For the dog to learn to sit it is important choose a training place as quiet as possible, and avoid teaching him abroad.
  • Use one word for each command you give, and avoid saying for example "no, sitting" as you could confuse him. You always just have to say 'sitting'.
  • When you have learned to sit behind the command, go giving him the treats less and less often.
  • Give the order in different environments: on the street, in the park, at a friend's house ... He must learn to sit whenever you ask him, in any environment.
