Teach Your Dog to Cross

Generally, many people prefer to go out for long walks with their pet to keep them in good shape and to take advantage of the fact that they relieve themselves in the street and not inside the house. The animal not only enjoys free trotting and playing in the meadow but can also smell here and there. However, when you come to a traffic light or you have to cross a street, many people may begin to regret going out with their animal because they cannot stop it or make it stand still like a statue.

And it is that achieving this behavior in a dog is not as easy as we think, so you must follow certain guidelines and have a good dose of patience to achieve it.

Today, we bring you some tips to get your pet across the street safely.

The first thing we must bear in mind when walking our animal is that we must keep it by our side all the time, in this way when we stop at a traffic light it must also stop. For this it is recommended that we stop about two meters from the edge before crossing the street. Then we let a couple of minutes pass, while the traffic light changes and gives us the green light, and then we resume the walk giving our dog an order like: "cross" or "Let's go." Little by little the animal will begin to identify this order with the sidewalks, with the crossroads and with the traffic lights, so it will learn to stop and resume walking on time.

Then we must teach them the order "stop", so that it stops when it should stop you at a traffic light or at a crossroads. We must be the ones who give the order and make the animal sit. When he is able to sit before the command, we must congratulate and reward him so that he begins to associate his behavior with the reward, and repeats it daily, or whenever necessary.

Remember that you need a lot of practice and a lot of patience, since our little animal does not learn overnight.
