The best books with dogs as protagonists

Dog reading a book.

On several occasions we have seen how dogs have served as a source of inspiration for different forms of art; Literature is one of them. Whether with dogs as protagonists or narrators, these animals have taken over a large number of stories, spanning different genres and eras. Hence we find books like the ones on this list.

1. Flushby Virginia Woolf (1933). This classic from English literature focuses on the life of Flush, a beautiful cocker spaniel with "stunned hazel eyes." The novel tells us how Fush is given when she is still a puppy to the famous poet Elizabeth Barrett. The little girl will become an accomplice of her love with the poet Robert Browning, towards whom she feels a certain animosity motivated by jealousy. The author manages in this work to present the story from the point of view of the animal, dominated by smell and instinct.

2. Woof! Story of an educator of masters, by Helmut Abadía (2001). Much more recent is this novel starring a bobtail, who lives with the writer of best sellers Leopoldo Abadía. The dog is, in addition to being an advertising model, a writer for his own blog, created to resolve the doubts of other dogs about the education of their owners. It is a fun and original story with friendship as the main theme.

3. Cityby Clifford D. Simak (1952). This science fiction novel places us in a hypothetical future in which men have disappeared and dogs have inherited power. The book collects eight stories told by dogs, who doubt the real existence of man, which they consider practically a mythological being. Each night, the animals come together to tell these stories to the pups of the pack.

4. PMistakes and sons of bitchesby Arturo Pérez-Reverte (2014). The Murcian journalist and writer compiles in this work several articles in which he shows his respect for dogs, comparing their nobility and loyalty with the mean and miserable behavior of the human being.

5. The dog that walked his masterby John Zeaman (2012). He tells us the story of John, a father of a family who gives in to the insistence of his children on having a dog and, as happens many times, he ends up being the one in charge of taking him out for walks every day. What begins as a routine walk through the neighborhood will be transformed into a true expedition in which both the dog and the man will feel free and alive.
