What do dogs dream of?

Dog sleeping

There are many times that we ask ourselves questions about our pets, wondering if dogs can feel and think even as we do. In many things they have proven to be the same, interpreting our emotions and feeling as we humans do, but there are still doubts. As for knowing what dogs dream of, it is somewhat complicated, since their brain has not been studied in this regard, but many things can be deduced from their behaviors while they sleep.

The first thing is that everyone has seen their dog barking, growling or even moving its legs as if it were running while you are dreaming. The world they know is that of their daily activities, so it is normal for them to dream about these things that are familiar to them and that are in their subconscious. Running, playing or being with their owners must be habitual dreams, although they are only guesswork. But there are many more things we can know about dog sleep.

Research is sometimes done to shed a little light on canine behavior and get to know them a bit more. Not in vain are they the closest domestic animals to man. It has become known that like us, dogs also enter the REM phase o Rapid Eye Movement of the dream. Encephalograms have been used to detect the fact that there is brain activity in dogs while they sleep, that is, they dream.

Deep sleep is when these dreams take place, and dogs can go through this phase several times a night. In reality, they tend to sleep lighter than humans, and their phases are shorter, but they dream anyway. It has also been found that in puppies there is more activity of this type, and it must be due to the fact that they are discovering the world and have a large amount of information to process.
