Why do dogs urinate on car wheels?

Dog urinating on the wheel of a car.

We have probably observed that dogs choose different areas when urinating during the walk. Some of the most common are wheels of cars or motorcycles, which for some reason are especially striking for them. This fact has nothing to do with the shape, color or material with which the tires are made, but with the privileged canine sense of smell.

As we know, dogs previously sniff the spaces on which they are going to urinate, something instinctive that has its explanation with its hierarchical nature. Thus, they usually "Mark" their territory through their urine, venting in those areas where other dogs have already done it or where they perceive certain odors.

Hence, vehicle wheels are one of their favorite parts for this, since thanks to their shape and movement absorb endless aromas. They circulate on different surfaces and areas (asphalt, earth, sand, etc.), so they are impregnated with all kinds of odors.

This especially draws the attention of dogs, that the more fragrances they perceive, the more desire they feel to leave their mark. In addition, if other dogs have acted in the same way before, it is created a kind of cycle in which each one of them wants to leave signs of their presence.

It is practically impossible to prevent dogs from urinating on the wheels of our car, something that is also common among cats. However, we can carry out some tricks to lower the odds. For example, impregnate the tires with lemon juice, since this aroma is very unpleasant for these animals. We can also spray vinegar, since it causes the same effect. In addition, it is recommended to wash the wheels frequently to remove residues and odors.

On the other hand, as pet owners we must acquire certain responsibilities, and among them is to ensure that they do not dirty the vehicles of others.
