Perhaps because there is the idea that females are more docile, calmer and easier to educate than males, although it must also be taken into account that with female dogs, we have heat, and all that this process entails. It is important to note that the first heat of bitches occurs between 6 and 10 months of age, in the smallest breeds, while in large breeds it can take place only at 24 months.

If you have a dog that is more or less that age, and you have begun to notice that the first heatIt is important that you write down the date, since this way you will know when the next heat will appear and you will be able to take the necessary preventive measures. In animals, especially in bitches, the heat is usually quite regular.

But how know if your dog is in heat? First of all, you will begin to notice that the animal is aggressive towards dogs, at first the females do not accept the males, they only do so during the period known as estrus, which begins ten days after having started the heat. In addition to the bleeding, you may notice that your dog's behavior is different: she can start to urinate frequently and anywhere, she can be more nervous and hyperactive.

Physically your vulva will increase in size, appear swollen and the bleeding that we already mentioned will appear. It is important that you know that the bleeding is not the same as that of humans, it will only be a few drops of blood. Generally these are the most common symptoms of heat, although sometimes vomiting, fever, yellowish discharge from the vulva may occur, so you should visit your vet since it is something abnormal.
